MEDIA ADVISORY: REUNION TO BRING SURGEONS TRAINED BY UVA’S JOHN JANE BACK TO CHARLOTTESVILLE

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. --  How do you pay back a dedicated physician and teacher who has trained many of the top neurosurgeons in the United States? How do you honor a medical legend? By walking the University of Virginia grounds once again in a reunion to recognize his 35 years of service to U.Va.

At least 40 neurosurgeons trained by Dr. John Jane, Sr., chairman of U.Va.’s Department of Neurological Surgery , will be making the trek to Charlottesville this week for the 35th Resident Reunion of the department. 

On Friday, Sept. 24 from 6:30pm to 8:00pm, Jane will be honored at a special reception and dinner at U. Va.’s Alumni Hall, 211 Emmett Street in Charlottesville.

The event coincides with a two-day U. Va. neurosurgery conference featuring the latest research and innovations on such topics as complex spine problems, disk replacement, aneurysms, and brain tumors, featuring internationally-renowned experts.

The conference takes place at Charlottesville’s Board’s Head Inn on Friday, Sept. 24 from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sat., Sept. 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.

Jane has trained 48 neurosurgeons. Seventeen of them are now professors and

Chairmen, nine are professors, eight are associate professors, and six are assistant professors.

Neurosurgeons trained by Dr. Jane treat patients around the world, from the Philippines to Mexico, and hold prestigious appointments in such institutions as: Washington University School of Medicine, Oregon Health Sciences University, University of Oklahoma, University of Pennsylvania Medical Center, The Cleveland Clinic, Duke University, Yale-New Haven Medical Center, George Washington University, Texas Neurosciences Institute, University of Michigan, SUNY Stony Brook, and Mt. Sinai School of Medicine.

Jane has been Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at U.Va. since 1969. He is editor of the Journal of Neurosurgery, the Journal of Neurosurgery: Spine and the Journal of Neurosurgery: Pediatrics and has received almost every award a neurosurgeon can receive in a long career in teaching and patient care.
