Dr. John A. Jane, Sr., chairman of the department of neurological surgery at the University of Virginia Health System, has been awarded the highest honor granted by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. Jane was presented with the 2004 Cushing Medal on May 4 at the AANS annual meeting in Orlando, Fla. He was honored for his many years of outstanding leadership and dedication to the field of neurosurgery. The Harvey Cushing Medal has been given every year since 1977 and recognizes an AANS member for distinguished service. Jane has been chairman of the department of neurological surgery at U.Va. since 1969. He earned his MD at the University of Chicago, where he was also awarded a PhD. Jane completed fellowships at the Montreal Neurosurgical Institute and McGill University. He conducted seminal research on aneurysms at the National Hospital in London, England and taught neurosurgery at Case Western Reserve University before coming to U.Va. A fellow of the American College of Surgeons, Jane has served as Director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and as President of The Society of Neurological Surgeons. He has been editor of the Journal of Neurosurgery since 1992. Jane is a committee member of the National Academy of Sciences for the Institute of Medicine. Jane’s clinical interests and research have focused on the treatment of head injury, spine disorders and pediatrics. He was one of the originators of modern techniques for the treatment of craniofacial disorders. Jane also treated the actor Christopher Reeve at U.Va. after his horseback riding accident in 1995.
