UNIVERSITY OF VIRGINIA AND COMMUNITY RESPONSE AGENCIES JOIN FORCES TO PRESENT EMERGENCY PREPAREDNESS INFORMATIONIf a major hurricane hit Central Virginia or there were a serious accident at the North Anna nuclear power station, would you know what to do? To answer questions on emergency preparedness, experts from the community and the University of Virginia will provide information on disaster planning for residents of the Charlottesville area on Sunday, Sept. 22. The free event, Remembrance Through Action -- A Call for Citizen Disaster Preparedness, which takes place from 2 p.m. until 5 p.m. at the Cage (next to U-Hall), is coordinated by the University of Virginia, with the leadership of the Health System. The Honorable John Hager, assistant to the governor for commonwealth preparedness, will present opening remarks. Participants will learn how to protect themselves and their families during a disaster through a variety of presentations, demonstrations and informational booths sponsored by local emergency response organizations. In addition, information on Citizen Emergency Response Training (CERT) will be available. We'll help people determine what they need in a disaster kit, how to plan for emergency boarding of pets and farm animals, where to get information on evacuation routes or emergency shelters, and other emergency preparedness information, said Marjorie Sidebottom, emergency preparedness chairman for U.Va. Health System and coordinator for the Remembrance Through Action event. Most of us just don't sit down with our children or neighbors and make plans for emergencies.
