U.VA. TO HOLD BRAIN AWARENSS OPEN HOUSEDo you ever wonder what is happening inside your head when you get a headache? Do you have a friend or relative who recently had a stroke or is in the early stages of Alzheimers disease? The University of Virginia Department of Neurology will give you a chance to explore these brain-related health topics during the Brain Awareness Open House on Tuesday, March 12 from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the U.Va. Hospital. The public is invited to participate in the free screenings for memory loss and stroke risk. U.Va. doctors will be available to talk about brain disorders and treatment options. Staff members will explain what happens to a stroke or brain injury patient on board the Pegasus emergency helicopter and in the emergency and operating rooms. In addition, tours of the Gamma Knife (knifeless surgery) area will be available. The event is free and parking will be validated. The open house is part of the National Brain Awareness Week celebration from March 11-17. The Brain Awareness campaign, started in 1996, is a joint venture of the Society for Neuroscience and the Dana Alliance for Brain Initiatives to help increase awareness of brain and nervous system research.
