FALL 2002 MEDICAL CENTER HOUR SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED

The University of Virginia School of Medicine's Medical Center Hour has begun its Fall 2002 weekly series on Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Jordan Conference Center Auditorium.

Founded in 1971 by former dean of the U.Va. School of Medicine, Dr. Thomas H. Hunter, the Medical Center Hour explores current issues and controversies for medicine and society, including topics in contemporary health care, culture, ethics, religion, law, scientific research and public policy. The U.Va Program of Humanities in Medicine produces the weekly forums, which are free and open to the public.

  • 18 September Religion, Violence, and Human Nature: Different Views of September11. Dr. J. Anderson Thomson, psychiatrist at the Elson Student Health Center and Institute of Law, Psychiatry & Public Policy at U.Va. and Dr. Leslie J. Blackhall, MTS, associate professor of internal medicine and medical education at U.Va., will be presenting.

  • 25 September Spirituality and Medicine and the Annual Cancer Center Lecture: Communicating about Cancer Prevention with the Underserved: Physical and Spiritual Barriers. Dr. Groesbeck P. Parham, obstetrician/gynecologist at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Comprehensive Cancer Center and Dr. Ross Isaacs, assistant professor of internal medicine and associate director of the Center for Improving Minority Health at U.Va., will be presenting. This talk will be co-sponsored by the Cancer Center.

  • 2 October Dax's Story: A Severely Burned Man's Thirty-Year Odyssey. Donald Dax Cowart, J.D., of Corpus Christi, Texas and James F. Childress, Ph.D., Kyle Professor of Religious Studies at the Institute for Practical Ethics and Religious Studies at U.Va., will be presenting. This talk will be co sponsored by the Institute for Practical Ethics, Center for Biomedical Ethics and the Department of Plastic and Maxillofacial Surgery and will take place in the McLeod Hall Auditorium.

  • 9 October To Have and to Hit? Understanding and Preventing Domestic Violence. Jacquelyn C. Campbell, Ph.D., RN, FAAN, Anna D. Wolf, endowed professor and associate dean of the research/doctoral program at Johns Hopkins University, will be presenting. This talk will be co-sponsored by the Women's Place at U.Va. Health System.

  • 16 October Bioethicist at Work: Clinical Case and Comments. Albert R. Jonsen, Ph.D., professor emeritus at the University of Washington in Seattle and Dr. R. Scott Jones, S. Hurt Watts professor of surgery at U.Va. Health System, will be presenting. This talk is co-sponsored by the Institute for Practical Ethics and the Center for Biomedical Ethics.

  • 23 October On the Edge of Life - Deciding for Extremely Premature Newborns. John Robertson, J.D., Vinson & Elkins Chair In Law at the University of Texas in Austin and Dr. Robert Boyle, professor of pediatrics at U.Va. Health System, will be presenting. This talk is co- sponsored by the Institute for Practical Ethics, Bioethics Program of the College of Arts & Sciences, Center for Biomedical Ethics and the Compassionate Care for Children group.

  • 30 October Osteopathic Medicine. Dixie Took Rawlins, D.O., dean and vice-president of academic affairs at Edward V. Virginia College of Osteopathic Medicine (VCOM), will be presenting. VCOM is an affiliate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute.

  • 6 November The Princess and the Pea: New Training Paradigms in Surgery. Dr. Julie A. Freischlag, vascular surgeon at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and Dr. Hilary Sanfey, associate professor of surgery at U.Va., will be presenting. This talk will be co-sponsored by the Department of Surgery.

  • 13 November In Our Own Backyard - Poverty, Disease, and Cultural Difference in Central Virginia. Dr. Narinder S. Arora, founder of the free clinic at the Mattaponi Indian Reservation in King William County, Va., will be presenting. This talk will be co-sponsored by the Diversity Council of the School of Medicine.

Andrea Tone, Ph.D., associate professor in the School of History, Technology & Society at Georgia Tech in Atlanta and Dr. Christine Peterson, Obstetrician/Gynecologist in the Student Health Center at U.Va., will be presenting.
