CHILDREN'S MIRACLE NETWORK TELETHON RAISES OVER $1 MILLION FOR U.VA.'S CHILDREN'S MEDICAL CENTERFunds raised surpassed last year's amountThis year's Children's Miracle Network (CMN) telethon hosted by WVIR NBC 29, raised $1.58 million dollars over the weekend. The telethon, which aired Saturday, June 1 through Sunday, June 2 for the 18th year in a row, raised money for the Children's Medical Center (CMC) at the University of Virginia Health System. This year, the funds raised will be divided three ways. A portion will go to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) renovation project which also received a million dollar gift from Food Lion, the Salisbury, N.C.- based grocery store chain. The money will also go towards the Pediatric Endowment Fund, which gives money for CMC research. The final portion will go towards extras like books and toys for the children who are cared for in the medical center. This year's telethon was momentous for the CMC for two reasons. First, the amount raised this year surpassed last year's $1.26 million total. Also, the Virginia representative for the CMN Champions Across America 2002 program was a Green County boy who was treated for leukemia at the Children's Medical Center. June 4, 2002 |
