U.VA. NURSING ALUMNI ASSOCIATION PRESENTS FACULTY AWARDSOn Saturday, Oct. 27, the University of Virginia School of Nursing Alumni Association will present its Distinguished Professor Award to Judith K. Sands, R.N., Ed.D., and its Excellence in Teaching Award to Reba Moyers Childress, R.N., M.S.N., F.N.P.-C.S. The awards will be presented during the school's Parents/Family Weekend celebration. The Distinguished Professor Award recognizes superior accomplishments in teaching, research and service. Sands, director of undergraduate studies, has been a School of Nursing faculty member since 1984. She holds the 1999 David H. Harrison Award for Academic Advising, the U.Va. All-University Teaching Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Education and 1999 honorable mention from the Outstanding Nurses of Virginia. Sands serves on the U.Va. Task Force on Assessment of Writing Competency, Roundtable on Diversity and Nursing Council for Clinical and Academic Collaboration. She has published six books, more than 30 articles and book chapters and twice received the American Journal of Nursing Book of the Year Award. The Excellence in Teaching Award recognizes outstanding teaching and clinical training for undergraduates. Reba Moyer Childress, a School of Nursing faculty member since 1992, most recently received the 2000 Arthur F. Stocker Faculty Award and the 2000 U.Va. School of Nursing Alumni Association's Innovative Teaching Award. Childress has authored and contributed to numerous articles and publications. She is a long-time editorial board member of The Virginia Legacy, the School of Nursing's alumni magazine, a past member of the School of Nursing Alumni Council and Advisory Board, and currently serves on the Information Technology Advisory Committee.
