U.VA. MEDICAL SCHOOL STUDENT AWARDED BOWMAN SCHOLARSHIP

The C. Richard Bowman Memorial Scholarship at the University of Virginia Medical School was awarded to Millie D. Long of Chapel Hill, N.C. on Oct. 8 during the annual Bowman Lecture.

The annual award is presented to a fourth-year medical student and equals a year's tuition and fees. Long was selected for her integrity, enthusiasm and genuine compassion for the ill-qualities that distinguished the late Dr. Bowman. Bowman was a Staunton native who graduated from the U.Va. School of Medicine in 1974 and died in a sailing accident in 1977.

Long graduated from the University of North Carolina with a bachelor's degree with distinction in French and a minor in chemistry and competed on the UNC swim and equestrian teams. Upon completion of medical school in May 2002, Long will work for a year in internal medicine followed by a residency in dermatology. She would like to pursue a fellowship in dermatologic surgery. Long is the 24th recipient of the Bowman Scholarship.

Members of the U.Va. medical faculty select five, fourth-year students to be Bowman Scholars each year, one of whom receives the Memorial Scholarship. Other Bowman Scholars selected were Carol A. Boersma of Arlington, Va., John R Gaughen of Atlanta, Ga., Sarah K. Pettrone of McLean, Va., and Sarah J. Polfliet of Santa Barbara, Calif.
