MEDICAL CENTER HOUR FALL SCHEDULE ANNOUNCED
The University of Virginia School of Medicine's Medical Center Hour has begun its Fall 2001 weekly series on Wednesdays from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m., in the Jordan Conference Center Auditorium.
Founded in 1971 by former dean of the U.Va. School of Medicine, Dr. Thomas H. Hunter, the Medical Center Hour explores current issues and controversies for medicine and society, including topics in contemporary health care, culture, ethics, religion, law, scientific research and public policy. The weekly forums, which are free and open to the public, are produced by the U.Va. Program of Humanities in Medicine.
- 7 November A Public Health Approach to Childhood Obesity. Dr. William Dietz of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and Joyce Pastors-Green of the Community Coalition on Childhood Obesity, will be speaking. This forum is co-presented with the Community Coalition on Childhood Obesity group.
- 14 November Research and the Health of the Public: Diabetes - Research in the 21st Century. Dr. Jerry Nadler, chairman of the Division of Endocrinology and Metabolism at U.Va. Health System, and Dr. Raghavendra Mirmira, physician in the Department of Internal Medicine at U.Va. Health System, will be speaking.
- 28 November U.Va Hospital Centennial Lecture: Information Technology - Transforming Health Care in the New Century. Jeff Goldsmith of Health Futures Incorporated in Charlottesville, will be speaking.
- 5 December Narrative Medicine - Does Writing Improve Doctoring? Dr. Rita Charon, physician at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons, and Dr. Julia E. Connelly, physician in the Department of Medicine and Program of Humanities in Medicine at U.Va., will be speaking.
