DECEMBER FIRST IS WORLD AIDS DAYFriday, December 1, 2000, marks the 13th annual World AIDS Day. In support, MTV will premiere “Staying Alive 2,” a half-hour documentary about the real stories behind the global AIDS epidemic, hosted by singer Ricky Martin. Dr. Greg Townsend, assistant professor of internal medicine at the University of Virginia Health System, and a patient of Dr. Townsend’s from the Charlottesville area, will be featured in the program.“Staying Alive 2” is a collaboration between UNAIDS, the World Bank and MTV and features the personal testimonies of six young people living with HIV/AIDS in six different countries. The aim is to both educate and inform the MTV audience and encourage and inspire viewers' participation in education, prevention and support projects in their own communities. The original “Staying Alive” premiered on MTV in 1998 to critical acclaim. According to UNAIDS, over 30 million people are infected with HIV/AIDS worldwide. Every 24 hours over 15,000 people are infected with HIV; half of those are 15-24 year olds. Ninety percent of people living with HIV are not aware they are infected. “Staying Alive 2” will air on MTV at 8:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. EST on Friday, December 1.
