U.VA. TEEN HEALTH CENTER TO OFFER TEEN CULTURE CONFERENCE

The U.Va. Teen Health Center, a division of the Women’s Place at the University of Virginia Health System, in collaboration with Martha Jefferson Hospital, will host its second annual Teen Culture Conference on Monday, October 16, at the Charlottesville Omni Hotel. The conference will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. A registration fee of $75 is required, which includes lunch.

The conference will address the challenges facing those who work with teens, with an emphasis on promoting a positive passage for teens into adulthood. In addition, the conference will highlight the unique opportunities and risks that teens face on a daily basis.

Speakers will include Laura Sessions Stepp, a journalist with the Washington Post who won a Pulitzer Prize for her coverage of American teenagers. Stepp recently published Our Last Best Shot, a book about early adolescence. Stephanie Ferguson, a consultant for national teen pregnancy prevention initiatives who has worked locally with MACAA’s project discovery program, will also speak.

The conference will include breakout sessions that focus on teen pregnancy prevention, adolescents and faith issues, teen depression, tattoos and body piercing and teens and the Internet.
