Peripheral Nerve Surgery at UVA

A team approach to total care Our neurosurgeons and neurologists work as a team with other caregivers in the fields of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Pain Management, Pathology, Oncology, and Orthopedic Surgery to optimize the care given to our patients with problems involving the peripheral nervous system.

  • Carpal tunnel syndrome
  • Schwannomas and neurofibromas
  • Brachial plexus injuries
  • Ulnar or peroneal nerve compression
  • Thoracic outlet syndrome

Diagnosing the problem

Prior to surgery or other treatment, our physicians work with The Lawn at UVAeach patient to diagnose the problem with techniques that may include:
  • EMG and nerve conduction studies
  • MRI-an imaging technique used when the physician suspects peripheral nerve tumors, traumatic injury, post-irradiation neuritis, chronic compression, and some pain syndromes.

Possible surgeries:

  • internal and external neurolysis for the management of scars,
  • surgical revision of painful neuromas
  • excision of nerve sheath tumors
  • surgical exploration of complex or scarred nerve injuries
  • nerve grafting for repair

Special services for children
