Life-saving knowledge
Stroke is the third leading cause of death and the major cause of adult disability in the United States. Each year, thousands of people experience stroke and or transient ischemic attacks (TIA) in Central Virginia.
At the University of Virginia Health System, we treat between 400 and 500 patients each year for stroke and TIA.
Most people do not recognize the warning signs and do not seek medical care, and thousands die as a result. Yet, with appropriate and timely risk modification and acute stroke intervention many of these deaths can be prevented.
A recent report by the American Heart Association reveals that 92 percent of adult stroke victims were not aware of the warning signs of stroke.
