Stroke Care at UVa
The UVa Stroke Center is certified by the Joint Commission on the Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO).
Our Stroke Center provides state-of-the-art care for victims of stroke and transient ischemic attacks (TIA).
- ASIT: The Acute Stroke Intervention Team (ASIT) is staffed by health care providers trained specifically in stroke medicine. Stroke neurologists are on call 24 hours a day to assess and treat acute stroke. We also offer t-PA (thrombolysis) treatment. When appropriate, our patients are evaluated for and offered experimental therapies (clinical trials).
- Special Imaging: Patients are evaluated with brain imaging within minutes. Modern therapy -- including the administration of t-PA -- requires that intervention be made as soon as possible after the onset of stroke symptoms. We can often reverse the process with this aggressive interventionalist approach. We also offer advanced brain imaging, including MRI with diffusion and perfusion imaging and angiography.
- Neurosurgical Expertise: Our neurologists and neurosurgeons use the latest techniques and therapies to help minimize damage and restore physical function. Our surgeons can treat such conditions as subarachnoid hemorrhages, unruptured cerebral aneurysms and arteriovenous malformations. - Specialized Stroke & Critical Care Units: Our patients are cared for in environments specially designed to meet their needs. These include our Nerancy Neuro Intensive Care Unit and Stroke Unit.
- Research & Treatment: The Stroke Center's goal is to establish a new standard of care for stroke patients through its intensive program of clinical research and specialized treatment protocols.
- Children: Children who suffer strokes receive treatment and rehabilitation in conjunction with the special services of UVa's Kluge Children's Rehabilitation Center.
- Neuropsychological evaluation is available for patients recovering from a stroke..
- Special Services : Patients and families of patients suffering with stroke may be under a great deal of stress or need some additional assistance. We offer a broad range of special services to make your stay as comfortable as possible.
