Radiation
Focused radiation aims the x-rays at the tumor and surrounding tissue. Whole brain radiation aims the radiation at the entire brain and is used to treat multiple tumors. For many tumors, radiation is given to the tumor and to a rim around the tumor, but not to the whole brain. A face mask may be used to keep the head from moving. The x-ray machine sends x-rays from several directions. Treatments are usually given in a series, such as five days a week for four to seven weeks.
Side effects of radiation may include hair loss, skin irritation, fatigue, nausea, decreased concentration, headache, and dizziness.
