Peritoneal dialysis. A dialysis fluid (dialysate) is put in your abdominal (peritoneal) cavity through a small tube. This fluid contains a sugar (dextrose) that draws wastes from your blood. After a few hours, the fluid containing the wastes is drained off. This procedure is repeated as needed. The most common type of peritoneal dialysis is continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD). You perform CAPD at home, exchanging the dialysis fluid in your abdomen four times a day, 7 days a week. Another form, continuous cycling peritoneal dialysis, can be done at night with a machine that automatically drains and refills the fluid in your abdomen. Don't abuse alcohol or other drugs Avoid long-term exposure to heavy metals, such as lead, as well as to solvents, fuels and other toxic substances. Annual Urine Test for Diabetics If you are diabetic, annually urine tests are recommended by the American Diabetes Association. Pregnant? If you have chronic kidney failure prenatal visits every two weeks for at least the first 32 weeks. Is physical activity or exercise important in renal or chronic disease?
