Mulholland Society Community Service Chairs
Two Positions, Elected alternately each Fall

There are two Community Service Chairs at any given time, one First Year Student and one Second Year student. During each Fall election, a new First Year is elected to replace the outgoing senior memeber.

Weekly time commitment varies depending on the season, from 1-6 hpw. The Mulholland Community Service Chairperson's responsibilities include:

  • Over the summer, a letter is sent to all incoming first years with a list and explanation of community service opportunities offered through the med school as well as through the community.  You will be in charge of collecting information about the current programs available, identifying the contact persons for each program, and making a flier.
  • You are responsible for maintaining an up-to-date database of community service activities on the Mulholland website. The Mulholland bulletin board in Jordan Hall is a great way to advertise upcoming service activities.
  • During orientation, you will publicize community service awareness and necessity.
  • There will be a minimum of three school-wide service projects (including students, faculty, and families) each semester.  We recommend one to be held during the week of orientation...the turnout is always superb.  You will be in charge of setting up these projects, publicizing, and gathering materials (i.e. gardening tools, paint, water) for the projects.  You are also expected to attend the projects.
  • Each year, there is money given to Mulholland specifically for community service events.  Student organizations in the med school can apply for funding for their individual projects.  You will be responsible for sending out the application form, selecting a committee to distribute the money, and collecting receipts from the organizations once the money has been spent.
  • You should also be aware of the ongoing service projects at UVA School of Medicine.  You are a liaison between the community, faculty, and students.  The LINK is a great way to let the health sciences community know what is going on.
  • Attend all Mulholland Society meetings and participate in school sponsored events, and assist other SOM organizations in facilitating service activities.
  • Dean Garson has organized a Health Sciences Center wide Community Service Committee consisting of faculty, staff, health care workers, and students.  You will be a member of this community and bring student input to the meetings.
  • Email bi-monthly service updates to the medical students publicizing service opportunities and acknowledging outstanding service commitment by individuals in the SOM.
  • Plan to have more than one school-wide project a semester, have regular Mulholland Society-sponsored projects, and apply for community service grants provided by organizations such as the AAMC.
