Second Year Class Positions

All Positions Elected in the Spring

PRESIDENT
One Position

There are three main jobs of the Second Year Class President:  1) Organization 2) Representation, and 3) Fundraising.  The job of second year class president is very awarding and a lot of fun, but it can also very time consuming.  Working with the rest of your board is key to surviving the year

1) Organization - Major projects the class is in charge of include the talent show, the school ski trip, Pre-Med Day, and EBSP. Although these responsibilities are spread over the duties of the other class officers, the president needs to help keep things organized and assist the other board members. The president also works with other student groups to plan lunch presentations and outside groups, such as Kaplan, to provide information to the class about the clinical years and the boards.

2) Representation - This involves sitting on the Principles of Medicine Committee, the Student Medical Education Committee, and the Student Affairs Committee, along with attending the Mulholland meetings, and helping on other committees when the need arises. The class president is also a liaison between the class and the course directors.

3) Fundraising - This may be the most important job of the president.  The job begins in April of First Year with the graduation sale. During the summer, the president begins working with the other officers and the anatomy department to plan and organize the used book and anatomy supply sale to be held the first week of classes in August. Throughout the year, the president must work with the rest of the board to raise class funds to pay for events including the talent show, student interest groups luncheons, and, of course, EBSP.

The job has been a ton of fun and is very rewarding.  The key is being able to work with and rely upon your other officers to help you through everything. If you enjoy meeting people, organizing events, and interacting within the different levels of the school then I strongly encourage you to run for 2nd Year President.

VICE PRESIDENT
One Position

Basically the job of the second year VP involves supporting the other class officers in fundraising and social activities. The two particular projects the VP is most involved with are coordinating Pre-med day for UVA undergraduate students in the fall and organizing the talent show in the spring.  The second year VP attends Mulholland meetings regularly and helps out with curriculum concerns and other issues as necessary.  The remainder of the duties revolve around supporting the other officers when the need arises.

TRESURER / SECRETARY
One Position

The job of the treasurer involves keeping track of our class funds, all that comes and goes. Primarily, the 2nd year class provides financial support for 2 main functions, the Talent Show and EBSP. We also provide support for several less expensive but worthy causes. Providing support requires raising money. To meet this end, the officers and class volunteers held several fund-raising events the past year. These included graduation sales, the 1st year book sale, and parent's weekend sales. Most of your work comes at the very beginning of the semester with the booksale, both the actual sale and then getting the money back to your fellow classmates. Our class officers were a team for fundraising so I never felt like it was too much work for me alone.

Drawbacks: Adding the realism of cost to our outrageously awesome ideas.

Advantages: Having a voice in the decisions and making sure that our class has enough funds for now and the future. I've loved working the the officers this year, and would definitely do it again.

SOCIAL CHAIR
Two Positions

The second year social chair is responsible for the planning of two major events: the ski trip and EBSP (End of Basic Sciences Party.) Both are very important, so a lot of planning goes into them. In addition the second year social chair is responsible for any summer activities they want to put together for the people who stay in town and for Grand Rounds until the new 1st years elect a social chair. We would suggest co-social chairs since the job requires so much responsibility and planning.  Finally the newly elected social chair is required to help in the set up of this year's EBSP that will be held on the last day of 2nd year exams.  The job is a lot of fun and you can set up things that people will really enjoy. There is a ton of freedom with what you can do, you just have to be creative.

Third Year Class Positions

All Positions Elected in the Spring

PRESIDENT
One Position

  • Time Commitment: 2-10h/wk
  • Represent your class at all Mulholland Meetings. If you are unavailable due to clinical duties, make sure another officer from the class is present.
  • Represent your class on the committee that plans and evaluates the clinical clerkships.
  • Represent your class on the committee that plans and evaluates Clinical Connections. This involves gathering feedback from your class and presenting it, along with constructive suggestions to the committee.
  • Plan/coordinate events with faculty in planning 4th year and career choice.
  • Coordinate the specific interests and efforts of your class.
  • Begin planning 4th year events including the class gift, the class play, and 4th year yearbook.

VICE PRESIDENT
One Position

Third Year of Medical School is very different from the basic science years because the entire class is scattered throughout Virginia.  As a class officer, one of the main duties is to keep everyone informed about events and class activities that are sponsored by the School of Medicine.  Specifically, the duties of VP include the following:
  • Planning and moderating career day (during 3rd year orientation) with Dr. Claudette Dalton.  This is one of the first tasks of this position and most of the work is done during the VP's spring semester of 2nd year.
  • Attending monthly Mulholland meetings to represent the class and work on school-wide issues.
  • Representing the class on SMEC (student medical education committee) and any other committees the President or VP deem appropriate.
  • Working with Clinical Connections organizers Reid Adams and Allison Innes to continually improve the program.
  • Planning class functions, fundraisers, etc with the other class officers.

TRESURER / SECRETARY
One Position

The 3rd year class treasurer/secretary is in charge of keeping the class bank account in order, dispersing funds where appropriate and monitoring the class budget to determine the class's ability to contribute to community service projects, class/school social events, etc. This position also requires working with other class officers to come up with ideas for a class gift which will be presented to the school of medicine upon our graduation. The position is enjoyable and is a great way to stay involved in class activities and the medical school even though we are all over the place during third year.

SOCIAL CHAIR
Two Positions

The 3rd year social chair position basically entails getting your class together anytime everyone is in town. You just set-up parties/bar nights for all the clinical connection weekends that happen throughout the year (about 6 of them.) Otherwise there isn't a whole lot else you are responsible for, but you have to make sure all the stuff you plan is fun because your class rarely will get together during the 3rd year.

Fourth Year Class Positions

All Positions Elected in the Spring

PRESIDENT
One Position

The role of class president in the fourth year, overall, is similar to the other three years. You will advocate for your class, act as a liaison to the medical school administration, and coordinate the activities of your class officers. However there are a number of additional activities that you will coordinate. Specific responsibilities can be broken down into three main areas:

For your class (Events & Awards):

  • Graduation Planning - coordinate with the office of student affairs.
  • Match Day Planning - coordinate with student affairs and help plan celebrations.
  • Class Play - reserve location, identify director and interested participants.
  • Baccalaureate - identify interested participants, plan service and elect speaker.
  • Social events as you see fit!
  • Robley Dunglison Award: Best Clinical Attending from third year
  • James Kindred: Best Teaching Resident

For Mulholland Society

  • Participate in Student Medical Education Committee (SMEC)
  • Attend Mulholland meetings or find an alternate
  • Coordinate with third year class president on advising

For the Medical School

  • Provide the oldest perspective on medical education, student life, etc.
  • Work with office of student academic support to recruit tutors.
  • Plan Parent's Day with First Years - Usually late October, plan the day, MC the event or find alternate.

Anything else that you feel like doing is also very much encouraged.

VICE PRESIDENT
One Position

  • Represent 4th year class at monthly Mulholland meetings, at various meetings with the deans, and on multiple curriculum committees.
  • With 1st year president and Student Affairs, help plan and run Parents' Day for the parents of the 1st year class at the beginning of the year.
  • Initiate and implement any necessary changes in student government or medical school curriculum and policy.
  • Help plan graduation events, including commencement, the class play, and associated social events.
  • Help plan Match Day events.
  • Stand in for 4th year class president when unavailable.

TRESURER / SECRETARY
One Position

The fourth year treasurer is responsible for continuing to manage the class funds (meaning balance a checking account).  Other, somewhat more time consuming, responsibilities are helping to formulate and put into action a plan for the class gift, and helping with the class play funding.  These are group efforts, but you should play a large role.  Attend Mulholland meetings whenever possible.  Should attempt not to funnel funds towards your personal interview expenses.

SOCIAL CHAIR
Two Positions

The social chair position for the fourth year entails planning various get-togethers through-out the year for the class, and culminates with Match Day and Graduation parties.  This is a good job for 2 people because of the traveling demands of interviews and away rotations, having a co-chair allows for more flexibility.  This is a fun job that does not entail too much work - as long as you like to plan parties!
