Second Year Class Positions
All Positions Elected in the Spring
PRESIDENT
One Position
| There are three main jobs of the Second Year Class President: 1) Organization 2) Representation, and 3) Fundraising. The job of second year class president is very awarding and a lot of fun, but it can also very time consuming. Working with the rest of your board is key to surviving the year
1) Organization - Major projects the class is in charge of include the talent show, the school ski trip, Pre-Med Day, and EBSP. Although these responsibilities are spread over the duties of the other class officers, the president needs to help keep things organized and assist the other board members. The president also works with other student groups to plan lunch presentations and outside groups, such as Kaplan, to provide information to the class about the clinical years and the boards. 2) Representation - This involves sitting on the Principles of Medicine Committee, the Student Medical Education Committee, and the Student Affairs Committee, along with attending the Mulholland meetings, and helping on other committees when the need arises. The class president is also a liaison between the class and the course directors. 3) Fundraising - This may be the most important job of the president. The job begins in April of First Year with the graduation sale. During the summer, the president begins working with the other officers and the anatomy department to plan and organize the used book and anatomy supply sale to be held the first week of classes in August. Throughout the year, the president must work with the rest of the board to raise class funds to pay for events including the talent show, student interest groups luncheons, and, of course, EBSP. The job has been a ton of fun and is very rewarding. The key is being able to work with and rely upon your other officers to help you through everything. If you enjoy meeting people, organizing events, and interacting within the different levels of the school then I strongly encourage you to run for 2nd Year President. |
VICE PRESIDENT
One Position
| Basically the job of the second year VP involves supporting the other class officers in fundraising and social activities. The two particular projects the VP is most involved with are coordinating Pre-med day for UVA undergraduate students in the fall and organizing the talent show in the spring. The second year VP attends Mulholland meetings regularly and helps out with curriculum concerns and other issues as necessary. The remainder of the duties revolve around supporting the other officers when the need arises. |
TRESURER / SECRETARY
One Position
|
The job of the treasurer involves keeping track of our class funds, all that comes and goes. Primarily, the 2nd year class provides financial support for 2 main functions, the Talent Show and EBSP. We also provide support for several less expensive but worthy causes. Providing support requires raising money. To meet this end, the officers and class volunteers held several fund-raising events the past year. These included graduation sales, the 1st year book sale, and parent's weekend sales. Most of your work comes at the very beginning of the semester with the booksale, both the actual sale and then getting the money back to your fellow classmates. Our class officers were a team for fundraising so I never felt like it was too much work for me alone. Drawbacks: Adding the realism of cost to our outrageously awesome ideas. Advantages: Having a voice in the decisions and making sure that our class has enough funds for now and the future. I've loved working the the officers this year, and would definitely do it again. |
SOCIAL CHAIR
Two Positions
| The second year social chair is responsible for the planning of two major events: the ski trip and EBSP (End of Basic Sciences Party.) Both are very important, so a lot of planning goes into them. In addition the second year social chair is responsible for any summer activities they want to put together for the people who stay in town and for Grand Rounds until the new 1st years elect a social chair. We would suggest co-social chairs since the job requires so much responsibility and planning. Finally the newly elected social chair is required to help in the set up of this year's EBSP that will be held on the last day of 2nd year exams. The job is a lot of fun and you can set up things that people will really enjoy. There is a ton of freedom with what you can do, you just have to be creative. |
