SMD'12 Class President

s09

Tina Ho

Dear SMD12,

It has been a rewarding privilege to serve as your Class President this past year. Below is a conservative estimate of our EBSP 2010 fundraising thus far (I apologize for not being able to provide more precise numbers; I forgot to be in touch with Jon Abelson before spring break):

Dr. Worden Study: $2200+

Qdoba Night and Barnes and Noble Giftwrapping: $150+

SMD12 Date Auction: $2300

VMed Gear Sale: $1000+

This means that our current fundraising total lies at $5650+.I am more excited, however, by a larger class accomplishment: our EBSP discussion forum in December. Given the feedback from that meeting, I would like to propose the following plan, which is briefly summarized below:

Same quality/scale EBSP but more cost-effective (e.g. UVA Alumni Hall as venue, whole-sale purchase of our beverages) à < $10,000 budget
Create a class legacy/make a positive contribution with a separate fundraising campaign for a designated charity à $5,000+ that would have otherwise gone to EBSP
We can definitely achieve the goals of this plan. I am confident that with the remaining VMed gear sale opportunities this year and the sales to SMD13 next fall that we will raise the rest of the money needed for EBSP. As for our charity fundraising endeavor, I would like to establish a philanthropy committee to help lead this effort.

Thank you for your support and feedback as always. I am always accessible by email, by phone, in person-please never hesitate to contact me!

SMD12 Love,

Tina

SMD'12 Secretary/Treasurer

Although the position of Secretary/Treasurer is not particularly glamorous, it is important nonetheless, especially this upcoming year as our class raises and allocates money for EBSP and the Talent Show, as well as other events, activities, and philanthropies. With this in mind, I believe I have several qualities that will make me an effective Secretary/Treasurer for our class: I am well-organized, a careful note-taker, and pay close attention to detail. Furthermore, I am prepared and eager to work closely with the other officers to raise the money necessary for EBSP and our other monetary needs. I have already been actively involved in several fundraising efforts on behalf of our class, including the gift wrapping drive as well as soliciting businesses to support the Camp Holiday Trails 5K.

One particularly relevant role of the 2nd year Sec/Treas is to manage the booksale, and then make sure everyone gets paid for their books, which I will accomplish in a timely manner. Along those lines, I would like to hold a few additional booksales throughout the year to both increase sales as well as give first years another opportunity to purchase books. Some other specific goals of mine include increasing class participation in fundraising efforts and being readily accessible for VMed gear purchases (in my ideal world, everyone would be outfitted in a full VMed sweatshirt/pants ensemble). Thank you for considering me for this position-I truly hope to have the opportunity to serve in a leadership role for our amazing class!

Hi Everyone!

Our class's officers this past year have been absolutely amazing at organizing events and getting people involved. I would like to continue this tradition as your Secretary/Treasurer next year. I believe this position is very important as most of our events require financial backing.

If elected, I will use my past fund-raising experience to make "bank" for our class. I would like to use my organizational skills and COOPERative nature to create a stable base for our class so our ideas are never hindered by a lack of funding. I am responsible and reliable so you can count on me while I count the money.

It would be a great pleasure to work with the other officers and make your next year of medical school organized, well-funded, and incredibly fabulous.

Over this past year, I've been extremely involved in the social aspects of our class.  Whether it was attending nearly all of the great functions put together by Sam and Nosheen or actually hosting some of them at my house.  I feel the social aspect of medical school is incredibly important in maintaining a sane state of mind and I will try to increase the interactions between our class and the others ones even further.  Obviously, the two major duties of the second year social chair are the Ski Trip and EBSP, and I feel ready to take on both challenges.  With the ski trip, I attended this year and have a good knowledge of how all the planning went down, so I feel that would be an easy transition.  As for EBSP, I am ready to make our party extremely memorable to celebrate us finishing ALL classes and also have ideas to make it more affordable without sacrificing the importance of celebrating our accomplishment.  UVa emphasizes Social Issues in Medicine and I promise to do the same.

I apologize for my jibberish but it is 5am and I have just gotten back from an 18.5 hr car ride and this thing is due sometime between 5 hours ago and 7 hours in the future so here are my bullet points:

  • I went to UVa for undergrad so I am familiar with the activities and venues that are available in the area, especially for large groups (I was in a sorority about the size of our med school class).
  • Sam and Nosheen are unbelievable. I would love to continue their traditions while adding in some new ideas. (…I love pictionary, cranium, scrabble and poker, so I would love to have a game night or poker tournament…)
  • The current officers have set the foundation for EBSP to be amazing. I would love to be a part of planning it. It is possible to have a party that surpasses everybody’s expectations without spending the equivalence of a Dodge Stratus (…no offense to the stratus…).
  • I love planning activities and I love seeing you guys have a good time and this would be an opportunity to do both. I am very good at organizing events and finding good deals.
  • Randy and Bob are two of most awesome guys I have ever met and would make great social chairs, so you can’t make a bad decision.

As social chair, I will get classes moved to 1pm so that we can go out every night, sleep in, and eat a casual lunch before strolling into class. I will also get all of the interest groups to replace free lunch talks with bar talks with free free finger food and drinks. In essence, all of your wildest dreams will come true...

Now seriously though, outrageous promises aside. I have experience from being my fraternity's social chair with planning out parties, road trips, and formals (accommodations, dinner, and a ballroom for 100+ people). This experience will definitely help with planning EBSP and our various other functions. I realize though that not everyone is interested in the same kinds of social events. As social chair, I want to solicit all of you for ideas on what you want to do. I don't think the social chairs should be the only ones setting the social agenda, everyone's interests should count. I also want to organize more interaction with other classes and other graduate schools. I mean I know I'm an enormously lovable guy that you could never get sick of, but I'm sure a lot of you would enjoy networking with others in the UVA community. In the end, I'll do a good job with everything in the social chair job description, but I also have a few of the aforementioned goals in mind as well to make the next year a fun one. So vote for Bob for social chair!

As a the Class of 2012’s representative on the Student Medical Education Committee, I would make sure our class’s opinion is convincingly heard, especially with the sweeping curriculum changes that look to be on the horizon. The idea to move to a system’s based curriculum will change the way the UVa School of Medicine operates as a whole including how attractive it would be for potential new students. This affect’s the continued excellence of our school and should be a matter dealt with using prudence and due diligence, two characteristics I would bring to the table. I would continue to make sure our individual class committees were effective and timely in regard to change that can not only affect future classes but also instill measures to benefit our own class. I hope to be granted this opportunity and thank you for the support.

In thinking about whether I wanted to run for SMEC rep again, my decision was an easy one. I was honored when I was elected this past fall, and serving on SMEC has been one of my favorite parts of first year (despite the less glamorous tasks like sending desperate “Please Join this SAC” emails). I hope I have represented all of you and your collective medical education in a thoughtful and attentive way, and I ask for your support once again.

I believe that I have the experience, dedication, and passion to continue as our class’s SMEC rep. The job description of SMEC rep goes like this: find ways to optimize student-faculty feedback, sit through lengthy course director meetings, provide input into serious issues like curriculum change and the development of the new medical school building, and help out with SMEC-related initiatives. I understand all of these responsibilities and welcome the challenges they bring. Furthermore, I have developed a rapport with the other members of SMEC and Mulholland, just as I hope I have developed a trust with all of you to faithfully represent your interests. For example, I worked closely with the Anatomy SAC in the fall to resolve several issues during what, at times, was a wild ride through cadaver shortages and poor faculty-student communication.

But enough about ancient history, I am here to talk about the future. I am ready, willing, and excited to take on another year as SMD 12 SMEC rep!

It's getting late and close to the deadline to submit our statements, and I don't think that I have it in me to think of another witty or intelligent blurb. So who don't you be a pal and vote for me for SMEC. That is all.
