SMD'11 Class President

s09 Maureen Dale

Hi everyone! I have really enjoyed serving as president of the class of 2011 for the past two years. From fundraising for what is going to be a fabulous EBSP to serving as a liaison to the faculty and course directors, I have loved being able to contribute to such an amazing class. As we transition to the wards in the spring, I look forward to continuing to serve our class in any way that I can, including being a liaison to the clinical faculty and helping to plan things such as post-shelf reunions. I also am excited to begin the planning for our fourth year responsibilities such as Match Day and the class yearbook. Good luck with the studying—we're almost there!

SMD'11 Vice President

I am running for 3rd year vice-president because I want to continue to work closely with the class officers to plan events and share our class ideas with Mulholland and the school.  I have been the school's community service chair for the past 2 years, and I also became a member of our class officers, so that we could more closely link our class to community service.  And it definitely worked!  Remember Boo House—one of our first service events.  It was fun, and the kids loved it!  Also, we had a great turnout for the 5K last year, the clothing drive was a huge success this winter, and we had a great response to the recent blood drive.  As vice president, I will work diligently with the other class officers on our many class projects and specifically plan and manage the career fair.  I will continue to bring our class community service projects that will keep us connected with the Charlottesville community and especially CHT.  It has been a privilege to serve as your community service chair for these past 2 years, and I hope to take on a new role as 3rd year vice president.  Thanks and good luck with studying!!!

Now that "Career Day" has been well established and integrated into third year orientation, I'm excited about the opportunities the third year VP has to serve the class through new initiatives. While I plan to work with Dr. Chris Peterson in continuing to improve Career Day, I also want to find ways in which we can gain new perspectives on different areas of medicine throughout the year.

For example, I hope to launch a "Physician Profiles" program where I would contact community doctors and/or alumni to investigate medical careers outside of what we see on the wards. This information would then be emailed out periodically. By statistics alone, it's clear that most of us will eventually enter private practice. In light of this, it would be invaluable to gain insight into medicine outside the university setting as we make specialty choices.

I believe that my experiences in the Cabell Society and AMSA have prepared me well for instituting this program. While my experience in class events has been somewhat limited, I hope to get more involved, working with other class officers in coordinating programs that are helpful in our professional growth and instrumental in keeping us in touch amidst all the movement in and out of Charlottesville.

With all the stress and limited social interactions these last few months have brought, I'm determined to make third year a time to simply revel in how close we all are to becoming doctors, with limited anxiety and unlimited awesomeness. Get pumped, 2011!

SMD'1 Secretary/Treasurer

I would truly appreciate the opportunity to become more involved and serve as our class secretary/treasure. I am a very dedicated and responsible person and I look forward to having the privilege to do more for our class. I may also be the last person alive who actually balances my checkbook with a pen and paper, and I assure you our finances will be in good hands! I hope you all know if there is ever anything you want to see done differently, or have any suggestions, I am always there with an open mind and would love to hear from you. I would greatly appreciate your vote – I won't let you down!

Dear class of 2011,

We have enjoyed serving as your social chairs for the past two years, so much so that we would like to do it again. Our main goal for third year is to REUNITE!  You, your friends, and those you only see during mandatory POM labs and small groups- all those lost to hours and hours and more hours of studying for the past few months- will have many oportunities 3rd year to get together, catch up for lost time, and have FUN with your classmates once again. We plan to pack the first week back with as many Valley circle parties, barbecues, and pool parties as possible, and stir up some class bonding before we hit the wards. Then after every shelf exam we'll try to make sure those who really want to celebrate can do just that. Thanks, and have fun at EBSP!

Dear soon-to-be M3s!,

With 2nd year coming to a close, SMEC might seem less relevant to our class. However, I am excited about working on some ideas for 3rd year as well as participating in the proposed curriculum changes for the basic science years.

I would like to modify the way SMEC for 3rd year currently runs by having a "SAC" representative on each of our rotation blocks (1-24). After each 2, 4, or 8 week block is over, the SAC rep can submit brief comments of what 'worked and didn't work' to the SMEC reps who will pass this information along (anonymously!) to the clerkship coordinator and clerkship director. I hope that this will benefit the next block of students, unlike our online evaluations which sometimes take months to read.

As we gain skills throughout 3rd year, certain lectures / workshops will become more or less relevant (i.e. people who start with family medicine have a very different foundation than the people who end on it). I think a more constant feedback will help us get the most out of our rotations.

I have really enjoyed being our class secretary/treasurer for the past two years as well as a SAC rep. I would love the opportunity to be on SMEC next year!

Please come talk to me if you have comments or ideas ... I am probably on a computer on the 2nd floor of the library :). Thanks for your consideration!

I would absolutely love the opportunity to serve as a 3rd year SMEC representative for our class. I am especially interested in the issues of how students acquire clinical skills and how we can improve on that process. Specific topics I have an interest in already include leveraging the new clinical sciences building and simulation center for acquiring clinical skills, clerkship crowding, evolving medical school affiliations and impact on clinical rotations at Fairfax and Roanoke sites, and preparing students for the clinical practice exam on USMLE 2 CS. I also think we need to advocate adequate compensation schemes to encourage busy clinical faculty to increase their commitment to teaching, and expand recognition and incentives to encourage resident commitment to teaching students, facilitating communications so the students know whether they are meeting faculty and resident expectations on clerkships in real time. I feel like I have been waiting my whole life to get onto the wards – this is why we came to medical school after all – and I want each of us to have an exemplary third year experience!

As we reach the final stretch and cram in more information than seems humanly possible we look back at how we could have done it differently. We wonder why we didn't have epidemiology when we were doing genetics, and immunology during our first year. Hindsight is always 20-20 but I believe its time to take a more proactive role. We must start implementing changes to benefit future classes as well as have foresight that will improve our current academic experience.

As a member of the Genetics, Physiology, Pathology, and Pharmacology SAC committees, I have had the opportunity to listen to your concerns and translate them to immediate curriculum reforms. For example, initially the curriculum intended to have one Pathology quiz for both Renal and Cardiology but I encouraged Dr. Innes to have two quizzes.

As we make the transition into third year it will be important to communicate student concerns to the administrative body so that we can maximize our learning experience. It's important that the Student Medical Education Committee have student representation that can speak from a variety of experiences. My role on several SAC committees has given me the unique opportunity to hear student concerns from across the spectrum. I am approachable and more importantly realize that this position needs a proactive approach to ensure that we address student needs and translate them to immediate reform.
