We are looking forward to fourth year as a time to rejuvenate and
reunite with our class after being scattered across Virginia for some time. And from what we gather from previous classes, there will be plenty of time in fourth year to plan activities that facilitate such a reunion. Our events should be more frequent, more diverse, and more inclusive. We will host a range of activities from athletic endeavors to bar nights, maybe something arts and crafty or animal-friendly. We are creative and we know how to throw a damn good party.

Remember how great last Thursday night was-the first EVER EOTYP? How about how much fun you had during that transition week before 3rd year-BBQ, Pirate party, brunch at Walker Square, etc? Imagine all that fun multiplied by free weekends, DxRx week and Match Day. Make Katie and Katie (McSutton) the first ever pair of SMD 2010 social chairs to serve more than one term, and we promise more great social activities to keep us all in touch as we scatter during 4th year, and if you thought EOTYP was good, imagine how great Match Day will be!

Colleagues,
As
one of the re- founders of the Student Medical Education Committee (SMEC),
watching it begin to solidify its presence in the UVA medical community
has been akin to a father watching his child ‘pull to stand’ for
the first time. However, make no mistake, this metaphorical baby can
easily lose his balance and crash to the floor. In an effort not to
belabor my point....SMEC is still in its infancy. Any organization with
as much potential as the SMEC needs to be handled with great care and
only with hands that know what the SMEC was, what it is, and where it
needs to go. I honestly believe those hands belong to me.
We
have grown considerably over the past year and much of the duty of next
year’s chair will be to make sure these newly chartered projects are
given the support they need to succeed. Whether it is continuing to
support Animesh Jain’s cross curricular fourth year teaching electives,
or continuing to support the USMLE step 1 board review, ensuring that
SMEC’s worthwhile endeavors are continued while at the same time making
sure that the SMEC remains flexible enough to mature, will be essential.
The
SMEC is ideally positioned for students and faculty to maintain a productive
dialogue, and when necessary, formulate plans of action to improve the
medical curriculum at UVA. Leading such an organization is not
a responsibility to be taken lightly. I sincerely hope you see me as
someone worthy of such a privilege.
