Mulholland Society President

s09

Jason Woods

Serving as President of the Mulholland society is something that I have worked for since entering medical school, and I would be extremely proud to represent all of you if elected. I am incredibly dedicated to improving our experience here, and feel that I have consistently proved that with my willingness to take on a variety of positions. Since my first year I have been actively involved in a large array of projects to benefit both the school and my class, including serving terms as the visiting student housing co-chair, an organizer for the Cadaver Memorial Service, class social chair during which I planned the End of Basic Sciences Party, and this year as the Mulholland Society Vice President. I am passionate about improving our curriculum in order to keep UVA at the forefront of medical education and have been actively involved with the Curriculum Committee for the last several months. That committee will be tasked over the next year with completely redesigning our curriculum in anticipation of the new medical sciences building. Perhaps most importantly I am well rounded with major interests outside of medicine, and have recently started an underground rap career covering Blackstreet songs (album pending). All joking aside, the Mulholland President is often the face of the medical school, both publically and within the school, and is an important position. Being elected to fill that role would be an incredible honor, and I hope that you will allow me to continue serve you.

s09

Lisa Herrmann

For three years, I have had the privilege of participating in Mulholland Society as SMD10 VP and Mulholland Co-VP.  I now hope to represent your interests in the coming year as Mulholland President.

This year Mulholland Society redefined itself with the revision of our Constitution.  As Vice President, I:

  • Revamped existing programs (Big Sibs program)
  • Revived older programs (Faculty-Student Luncheon)
  • Created new programs (Pre-Med Mentoring program)

The coming year brings continued construction of the new MedEd building and an anticipated class size increase.  As President, I will focus on:

  • Curriculum - an exciting area of change as we transition to a systems-based basic science curriculum
    • Third-year Clerkship Evaluation system - a project to assess/improve its transparency and consistency is underway.
    • Class size increase - I will continue to represent students' interests to maintain the stellar quality of our education.
  • Budgeting -
    • Recent budget cuts and expanding student programs will necessitate creativity and restructuring of the budget to maintain our current level of excellence in programming.
  • Community -
    • Continue to encourage participation of all students in our many programs and interactions with the administration.
    • Maintain our growing presence in the UVA and Charlottesville communities with current programs (Pre-Med Mentors/supporting programs for Camp Holiday Trails) while encouraging new collaborations.

So what distinguishes me?  I am extremely energetic, hardworking, and competent.  I am an ambassador for the SOM with the capacity to look beyond the status quo to realize the potential of our student body.  I would be honored to serve as your Mulholland President next year.

Sunhee Park

Within the past two years, I have served as a class and Mulholland social chair and AMA recruitment chair. In an effort to expand my service and commitment to the student body and SOM, I ask that you read and consider me for your vote of Mulholland VP.

Reflecting upon my past experiences, particularly within the Mulholland Society, I believe that they have equipped me with the appropriate skill sets and an understanding of what the position of VP entails. Regarding the role and its duties, I would like to expand the "Meet the Faculty" luncheon series both in number and form. Inviting the deans and faculty beyond the basic sciences curriculum may cater to the unique experiences and concerns of the upperclassmen while fostering new relationships with incoming students. Based upon discussions with outgoing leadership, I would like to improve upon the due diligence implemented this past year to track fund requests/usage to determine the relevancy and resourcefulness of our budgeting decisions. In addition, I promise to fulfill every duty, support my fellow officers, voice and act upon the concerns of the student body, and hopefully take a more involved role in upcoming developments such as curriculum changes and new SOM building.

I have loved planning what I hope were memorable social events for you all, and I promise to work hard to hopefully exceed your expectations and implement change as VP. Hardworking and dedicated, a force behind the forgotten details - vote Sunhee Park for VP. Thank you.

  s09

Emily Binns

My name is Emily Binns and I am running for Mulholland Vice President.  As Mulholland Treasurer, I have worked closely with the current president and vice presidents to update and revise our budget. The Mulholland Society already faces challenges to support all of our clubs and events, and in the near future budget cuts may pose even greater challenges.  This year, we have made many changes hoping to better serve the various clubs, organizations and events that the Mulholland Society supports. As part of my duties as vice president, I would like to continue my work on the activities fund portion of the budget.  I promise to follow up on the changes made last year, to keep all successful changes, and to revise any detrimental changes, so that our clubs can continue to function without financial worries. In addition, I promise to continue the very successful Dean’s dinners and Meet-the-Faculty luncheons that were reinstituted this year. As Dean DeKosky has settled in this year, I hope to start the Dean’s dinners earlier in the year, and to increase the number to a minimum of four, spaced evenly throughout the year, so that all classes will have better opportunity to attend.  As we look forward to transitioning to the new medical school building, 2009-2010 promises to be an exciting year during which I would be honored to serve as your Mulholland Vice President.  Thank you for your time and your consideration!

For the past two years, I have been one of the two Mulholland Society social chairs.  This committee has planned many events for our class and the medical school as a whole, including the Halloween, prom, and the bonfire, and I hope that everyone enjoyed attending these events as much as Sunhee and I enjoyed organizing them.

As a social chair, I worked closely with our President and Treasurer to schedule and organize events.  I also attended the monthly Mulholland Society meetings.  These interactions gave me the opportunity to learn the policy and budget considerations of our student government and their impact on our student life and education.  This knowledge combined with my interests for organizing events will support the responsibilities that I would assume as vice-president, including organizing the faculty luncheons, managing the Big Sibs program, and allocating the activities fund.   Lisa and Jason, our current vice-presidents, have done an amazing job, and if I am elected to the office of the vice-presidency, I intend to build upon their initiatives.  I have sincerely enjoyed working for you in the past, and I hope that I shall be allowed to continue to work for you in the future.

Hey VMed!

I am very excited to run for your Mulholland Vice President.  I seek this office because I want to continue my involvement with the Mulholland Society after serving as SMD ’11 Vice President.  I took charge of the SMD ‘12 book sale in the fall and organized the Talent Show in the spring.  The Talent Show in particular tested my organizational and leadership skills, but with the help of many great people, it turned out to be an awesome night!  Also while in med school, I served on the VMOO leadership team and as a student leader in the Christian Medical Association (CMA) this past year.

As one of the Mulholland VPs, I hope to take these experiences and apply them to the broader student body in a variety of ways.  I look forward to improving the Big Sibs program including using Facebook groups to increase pre-orientation contact among participants that hopefully will start strong class connections early.  I also want to setup some open forums to discuss what the student body wants to see out of the new Med-Ed building in conjunction with the new curriculum change set to take place in the near future.  Finally, I hope to build upon the transparency of the budget process implemented by Jason and Lisa, and continue to give clubs the support they need.

Thanks for reading, and I appreciate your vote!

-Jon

Mulholland Society Treasurer

  1

Colleen Bressler

Hi Vmed. Another week, another calendar. Oops, wrong email, no useless facts this time...

As the current Mulholland Secretary, I would love the opportunity to continue serving the medical school as the Mulholland Treasurer. The current Treasurer and VPs put a great deal of effort into the budget this year and created a new system to attempt to streamline the process of providing funds for the different organizations. I would like to continue their hard work along with a few new goals to make the process as seamless as possible. As an undergrad, I had the experience being the treasurer of an organization that had two separate accounts, much like Mulholland society. One of those accounts was overseen by a higher entity, from whom we needed approval over the use of funds as well as the appropriate paperwork completed by certain dates. The following year, I was elected to a position where I was associated with the higher entity and helped determine how much money was given to each organization based on their requests, much like how the Mulholland Treasurer and VPs determine the budget.

  s09

Nick Farber

It would be an honor to be the Mulholland Treasurer for the 2009-2010 school year. I have previous experience with these matters from my undergraduate career. In my fraternity I was responsible for creating and maintaining the budget as well as coordinating expenses, collection of receipts, and managing the fraternity bank accounts. As Mulholland treasurer I would continue to perform these duties in a timely and diligent fashion in order to make sure the board its functions run smoothly and efficiently. I would also love an opportunity to become more involved with the student government of our medical school in order to have a positive influence on our educational experience. Our curriculum is in a state of flux and it would be a privilege to be part of the executive board that handles this change. Thank you for your support.

I get this feeling like pretty much all of the candidates are similar to one another in our skill sets. Odds are that we're intelligent (I mean we're all in med school after all), hard working (gunners in our past...pre UVA pass/fail of course) and organized. So how am I more qualified than the other candidates?

One word sums it up...JEWISH. Despite how some people of my faith attempt to shun the stereotype, I don't shy away from it. No, I embrace it. It's true...I'm good with money. There's nothing I can do to change it. Hell, my last name means merchant...monetary transactions and keeping track of them is in my DNA. So while we're all in mood, why don't you embrace me too...as your next Mullholland treasurer. I promise to watch the Mulholland societies' spending like a hawk. On top of that, I promise to hondel every store or distributer in sight. When it comes to getting the best metsieh on things, (and keeping track of how much we have spent) I'm your man.

Oh yeah, obligatory mention of how good of an idea it is to find a good treasurer like me who can stretch your buck in these difficult economic times.

If you were curious, hondel means "to bargain", and metsieh means "a deal"

Nosheen Reza

Nosheen is the nicest person alive!  She puts so much time and effort into making sure that everyone around her is having a great time.  As First Year Social Chair, she has thrown amazing events like the Halloween and Faux New Year parties, First Year "Re-Orientation Week" during our Genetics course, the class Tacky Christmahanukwaanzakah Party, and countless other events throughout the year.  Once, she even stepped in defend me right before I was about to get into a bar fight, and I'm sure she would do the same for any of you.  Nosheen is a great friend and an amazing First Year Social Chair, and she will be even better as Mulholland Social Chair.

Sam Zhao

It is impossible to be in the company of Sam Zhao and not have a good time.  Just try and keep a straight face when he laughs.  As SMD12 Social Co-Chair, Sam gave his blood, sweat, tears, credit card, living room, and rice cooker to make sure the events he planned were as fun as humanly possible.  His resume includes wicked Halloween and Faux New Years parties, wildly successful Welcome Back Power Hours, hilarious trips to the Ice Park, and much more!  Together, Sam and I will take Foxfields, Bonfire, and Prom to absurdly fun levels and plan more events for interclass socializing.  You know you would miss weekly emails from Sam, so do yourself a favor and elect him Mulholland Social Co-Chair!

The AAMC Organization of Student Representatives (OSR) Representatives
Remember to vote for 2 nominees.

  s09

Allison Lippert

First, thanks for taking the time to actually read this. I am hoping to serve as one of the AAMC representatives. As an upcoming fourth year, I have had the chance to see the UVA curriculum evolve each year and understand the unique concerns during each year of med school. Because of this, I believe am in a good position to compare UVA to other med schools in hopes of bringing ideas back to UVA that will help change it for the better. During my first and second years, I also served as Mulholland secretary and then treasurer, and I understand how much of our student government operates. In addition, I am always willing to talk with people about any concerns that they have regarding the curriculum, boards, or other issues. Given these qualities, I know that I can represent UVA on a national level and be a voice for our student body.

Among the many increasing focuses for AAMC that also apply to medical students and UVA are the cost of medical school and debts, insurance, the increase in medical student class size, and humanism in medicine. For example, as a representative for AAMC, I hope to address these issues so that we may improve the ability to procure loans and support humanism in medicine through awards issued to faculty. I would really appreciate the opportunity to serve as your AAMC representative. Thanks so much for your vote : )

  s09

Chris Bailey

Medical education is currently in a state of flux. As students, we have a unique opportunity to make sure that this change is in the right direction. Some of the most pressing issues the AAMC is dealing with include content changes in the USMLE exams, preparations to replace USMLE exams with new Gateway exams, and fluctuations in student loan availability. Being informed is the first step we can take towards making a positive impact on these issues.

As an AAMC OSR representative, I will take concrete actions to make sure students have easy access to information on AAMC issues ranging from curriculum reform to the National Resident Matching Program.

If elected, I will arrange preconference rallies and post-conference reports before and after each AAMC conference. Preconference rallies will be an opportunity for us as students to set priorities and discuss concerns we want voiced at AAMC conferences. After each AAMC conference, post-conference reports will be given to update the student body on the AAMC’s national objectives and how UVA’s evolving curriculum is adapting to meet those standards.

As an incentive to come and learn how the AAMC’s decisions will impact our education I have no qualms about offering enticements such as refreshments, door prizes, or raffles at preconference rallies and post-conference reports.
So make the choice that will increase your access to information on issues relevant to your medical education. Cast your vote for Chris Bailey for AAMC OSR representative.

s09

Kate Collins

To preface this statement, I had to rewrite this after my submission when I discovered we have a 250 word limit... So if you are reading this and are interested in my research and thoughts on issues, just shoot me an email.

The AAMC is an organization that governs much of the content of medical education and advocates for issues important to us as medical students and future physicians. I have a great interest in policy as a career path in addition to my future as a physician, and would be honored to start as a representative of UVA at the AAMC.

I also feel that it is important that someone who represents our school at a national conference has had experience with our curriculum and the issues that have arisen in regards to medical education over the course of both basic science and clinical years. As a rising fourth year I have both been there myself and have had the opportunity to see how changes in our curriculum have affected students who have come after us. I am particularly interested in addressing current concerns over licensing examinations, as well as issues surrounding medical education financing, but I would love to hear from you as to what issues you think should be addressed at the national level.

I am out of room, but please do contact me if you are interested in hearing more about the information I have gathered on these issues. Thank you for your consideration.

Student Insurance Representative

  s09

Richard Guyer

As medical students, a large majority of us get our health coverage through the university's insurance program.  Therefore it is important for us to have a Student Insurance Representative who understands the basic issues of health insurance and who will effectively advise the VP of Student Affairs.  Having been an Economics major as an undergraduate and taken classes on health economics, I have a sound grasp of the principles of the insurance world.  I want to use that knowledge to ensure that the health insurance options open to medical students - and to the rest of the UVA community - yield the maximum return on our dollars spent.  Developing ways to provide students and staff with comprehensive coverage at a reasonable price will be my top focus.  Another issue of significance - particularly to those of us who have families - is ensuring that good, fairly priced insurance is available to spouses and children.

  s09

Rajesh Jain

Ideally, the student insurance representative would have had years of experience and knowledge with health insurances. Unfortunately, very few, if any, can boast of that. My knowledge of health insurance comes from a health economics course I took as an undergraduate, my personal experience, and the general media. I am excited to learn more and will do everything I can to represent our interests as medical students. I will be open to your ideas and hope I will earn your vote. Thank you.

Thaddee Valdelievre

Hi guys, I am running to be the student insurance rep because I have had an interest in the financial side of healthcare for quite some time. For a while in college I considered being an econ major, and was very interested in strategies for regulating companies fairly to increase overall efficiency of systems. I would still like to be involved in this field as a doctor at some point in the future, and I believe I will be enthusiastic about this position and work to make sure the policies are fair and pertinent for students.

Medical Alumni Association Representative

Clare Johnson

Hi! I’m running for Alumni Representative and would love your vote. A few reasons why you should consider voting for me:

  1. By talking with the current rep, I know exactly what this position entails. The rep will be attending all MAA meetings, helping with the White Coat Ceremony and Match Day reception, and organizing the class gift.
  2. I plan to stay involved with the Alumni Association for the Class of 2010 after I graduate and would like to start helping now.
  3. I’ll ensure everyone is aware what the Alumni Association is doing and what we can do as current med students (besides have fun at the Homestead).
  4. I’m good at getting things done and speaking up in meetings. I also love meeting new people.
  5. If elected, I’ll make sure we give an awesome class gift.

Feel free to contact me with any questions!

For the past three years, I have had the opportunity to work with the Mulholland Society as the first year social chair, last year as one of the Mulholland social chairs, and this year as one of the 3rd year SMEC clerkship representatives.  I think that my experience, especially my work as social chair, will serve me well in working with the alumni association.  Some of my accomplishments include putting together first year orientation, Med School Prom, Foxfield, and the Halloween Party. In addition, with the help of the other officers, we were able to throw the first ever Med School Faux New Year's Party as well as bring back the Winter Bonfire. Through all of these events, I believe that I have shown my ability to coordinate many different aspects of a given task, as well as work with students, administrators, and businesses within the community to bring it all together.  As alumni representative, I will be able to put these talents to use in organizing the White Coat Ceremony, the MAA Homecoming tailgate, and the MAA Match Day reception.  I will also serve as your voice, communicating ideas for new alumni-sponsored projects and events.  Let's make the most out of this next year!

Thank you for your consideration.

The faculty/administration often cite professionalism as one of the most important objectives of our education at this institution. While it may seem to be a side-issue at times, I agree that being a doctor means like acting like one as well. However, professionalism is a two-way street, and the faculty and administration need to be held accountable for their behavior as well. This last year I represented the school of medicine on the Honor Committee, and was a strong voice on the behalf of the school to protect the Community of Trust, and would look forward to serving the school to uphold our tenants of professionalism.

s09

 Anne Bowman

Throughout my first two years as a student at the University of Virginia School of Medicine, I have been impressed at the sense of mutual trust and respect that is evident among members of the medical school community. I believe that having the opportunity to study the practice of medicine in an environment in which we, as students, can work without fear of abuse and discrimination is an essential part of our professional and personal development, and I am dedicated to working to maintain such an environment as a Student Advocacy Committee Representative. While I have never held a similar office in the past, I will take on the responsibilities of a Student Advocacy Committee Representative with the commitment, discernment and thoughtfulness that filling this position will require. I would be honored to serve you and the entire medical school community in this capacity.

 s09

Chris Harnain

So many of you are probably wondering what is Student Advocacy Committee? Has an anatomy TA ever made a move on you? Has a professor ever said you are stupid? Has a resident told you that you should have gone to nursing school? Have you felt all alone and bewildered in this maze we call medical school? Well have no fear Student Advocacy committee is here. SAC seeks to eliminate the mistreatment of medical students and to promote a supportive learning environment for students in the School of Medicine. SAC is available to hear, evaluate, and act on reports of mistreatment. These reports may involve sexism, racism, harassment, discrimination, verbal abuse, and other types of unprofessional behavior directed at students.

Jokes aside - SAC is an important committee that plays a necessary role in our medical school experience. As a UVa undergraduate I served as a judge for the University Judiciary Committee, which is similar to SAC. As a judge I worked as a moderator between students, faculty, deans of the various schools, and both the Charlottesville and University Police Departments. Throughout that time I developed problem solving and decision making skills that enabled me to effectively navigate through delicate issues, while preserving each students voice. I think it's important that these committees have diverse student representation that will enable the student body to feel adequately represented. I have a unique perspective and believe that I can bring new ideas to SAC.

s09

Caroline Reuter

Hello! I decided that I wanted to run for Student Advocacy Committee this year because I believe that its important to have a safe space for anyone who feels maligned, mistreated or discriminated against to address their concerns to the parties involved in a productive manner without fear of professional ramifications or widely inaccurate rumors. I think I handle conflict well and while not being overly aggressive or confrontational, I think I am assertive enough to make my point understood. I'm always willing to listen and keep to myself things that are told to me in confidence. I have served as a mediator in the past, but won't bore you with listing my high school and college resume.

Quick summary: I think I'd be good for this job because I'm patient, non-judgmental, and a good listener and I care about my classmates and hope to help them work through whatever potential conflicts may arise on the wards in a productive manner so that they feel that despite the fact that we may all be scrubs next year that doesn't mean that we don't deserve a certain level of respect and social courtesy.

Thank you. Best of luck to my fellow running mates.

Human Investigation Review Board Representatives

I am writing today to ask for your vote to be the next student representative on the University's Human Investigation Review Board. My qualifications include: current MD/PhD student; a future career in medical research; past work on a research project that needed to pass an institutional review board because it involved mice; experience analyzing and discussing research methods and protocol; and available time secondary to starting graduate school next semester. In addition, I have a personal interest in learning how to develop research protocols and working with the University's investigation review board will give me invaluable experience towards that goal. Thank you for taking the time to read this, and if you have any additional questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me.

We all recognize the importance of clinical research in the field of medicine, but experiments with human subjects represent an element of our profession that has dark roots and the potential for ethical missteps. I am reassured that Human Investigation Review Boards would never allow projects like the Tuskegee Experiment to happen today, but short of that extreme there is a broad gray zone that demands careful scrutiny. The work being done at our University can't afford the luxury of hindsight to protect ethical boundaries but must instead weigh the risk of human cost with the benefits of medical knowledge, being careful to recognize the timelessness of human rights. That is why I would love the opportunity to work with physicians, scientists and community members as part of the Human Investigation Committee to oversee the projects being done at our institution. As part of this committee I would be responsible for reviewing all protocols and presenting 1-2 protocols in depth at meetings. As a future Psychiatrist and someone with a strong interest in ethics I think this role would be a great chance for me to participate in a committee with responsibilities to human subjects, physicians and the entire community.
