Before proceeding, please read the description of Early and Standard Admissions.
Applicants should apply to the University of Virginia School of Medicine through the American Medical College Application Service (AMCAS). You must complete:
(1) a UVa Supplemental Medical School application through AMCAS and
(2) a UVa MSTP Supplemental On-line application linked at the bottom of this page.
Letters of Reference On the Supplement (and Elsewhere)
The online supplement asks for educational and contact information, as well as the name, title, phone number and email of two individuals who will submit letters of reference for you through AMCAS. It is best if they have been your academic or research advisers or individuals who are familiar with your research activities. The key is that we hear from those who know your research best, so list the two letters that make the best information available to us. We will make sure we have them before submitting your application for MSTP review, even if your application status has already been made Complete by Medical Admissions.
We expect that generally, the people you list on the MSTP online application as submitting letters will be included in the packet that you send to Med School Admissions via AMCAS. If this is the case, there is no need to resubmit them. We will read the whole packet that you submit via AMCAS, and there is no limit on the number of letters we will read.
If you send additional letters, they can be submitted individually via AMCAS, though you might want to let us know if they are being submitted after your application status is Complete. See the FAQ at AMCAS for more information:
http://www.aamc.org/students/amcas/faq/amcaslettersfaq.htm
Please submit publications or other supplemental material to mstp@virginia.edu.
As the final deadline approaches, the US Postal Service can be very busy, and the UVa Postal Service is closed for certain days around the holidays, so there can be a backlog of mail delivery. Please allot extra time for mail delivery during the holidays, or else send your packages through an independent express mail service.
Questions on the Online Supplement
There are three short answer essays of 300 words maximum for each.
(1) Which areas of biomedical research interest you most, and why?
(2) Briefly indicate what you perceive as the major benefits of an MD/PhD Program as compared to either an MD or PhD Program alone.
(3) What prompted you to apply to the University of Virginia MSTP?
The only way that we can link your application to your AMCAS application is through your AMCAS ID, so you must have your AMCAS ID to complete the UVa MSTP Online Application.
You cannot save a draft of the Online Application and return to it later. If you submit a draft in error, please email the MSTP office so that we can disregard your draft.
