Early Admission - The University of Virginia Medical Scientist Training Program offers both standard and early admissions processes.  Early admission occurs October through December, and standard admission occurs in January and February.

Students wishing to be considered during early admission should have their applications complete by November 1 at the latest.  Students applying during early admission may be invited to interview October through December, pending available space.  Some admissions offers are within a couple weeks of the interview, and others are made at the full admissions committee meeting in mid-December.

Standard Admission - The deadline for the MSTP supplemental online application is January 10, but the UVa School of Medicine deadline for all other materials is January 4.  Admission decisions for interviews conducted during the standard period are typically rendered by early March.

Admission decisions are made jointly by the Medical School and MSTP Admissions Committees.  Applicants not selected for interview through MSTP during early or standard admissions periods may still receive invitations to interview at the Medical School during January, February, and March.

Primary Care CenterCriteria for Admission - Our goal is to recruit outstanding students who are committed to research and who will become leading physician-scientists. Requirements for application include completion of a standard pre-medical curriculum at an accredited undergraduate institution and MCAT scores. GRE scores will be considered but are not required and do not substitute for MCAT scores.

Strong weighting will be given to MSTP applicants who exhibit the following characteristics: 1) Evidence of independent research experience and demonstrated commitment to a career in biomedical research; 2) Completion of basic science course work beyond the minimum required for admission to Medical School, including advanced courses with a research focus; 3) An appreciation of the demands of an MSTP and of a career as a physician-scientist.

Applicants are encouraged to obtain letters of recommendation from individuals familiar with their research experience and potential. You are also encouraged to send reprints of publications that you have co-authored or other relevant materials for review by the MSTP Admissions Committee.  Letters of recommendation are sent to Medical Admissions, and publications or other materials are sent to the MSTP, or preferably, emailed to mstp@virginia.edu.
