Our Polar Vantage XL (Polar Electro Inc., Port Washington, NY) heart rate monitor system consists of a transmitter worn around the patient's chest, and a receiver/watch worn on the patient's wrist. The transmitter monitors the heartbeat using two electrodes embedded inside the transmitter strap. This information is sent by radio waves to the receiver, which acts as a heart rate display, as well as a conventional digital watch/stopwatch. The heart rate can be sampled at 5, 15 or 60 second intervals for up to 33 continuous hours (at the 60 second recording interval). The data is then downloaded to any computer for analysis.
