Q. I'm interested in working for the Department. How do I find out what is available and apply?
A. Positions that are being advertised by the department are frequently listed on our job page, but the best place to check on job postings is the Human Resources Site, because applications are handled through that department.
Q. Who should I contact about applying to the graduate program?
A. The graduate recruiting advisor is Dr. Ann Beyer. Her email is alb4h@virginia.edu. For more information see the graduate pages.

Q. What kind of research does the department do?
A. Microbiology is a basic sciences department, which essentially means that it does research into biological mechanisms in order to gain a better understanding of genetics, pathogens, and cellular systems. For more information, please see the research pages, and the faculty's individual research interests.
Q. How do I find out about grant opportunities?
A. The School of Medicine's Grant's office is a good place to start. The SRA (Society of Research Administrators) has a good page to search for private funding. Grantsnet is also a good resource.
Q. I have a piece of equipment that is outdated or unrepairable- how do I dispose of it?
A. UVa's Surplus Property System is in place to make the best use of unneeded items. Virginia McCowan in the departmental office can help arrange transfers to surplus.
Q. Where are you located?
A. Charlottesville, Virginia, USA is in the Park in midwestern Virginia, two hours southwest of the Washington, DC, and a little over an hour west of Richmond. The laboratories and offices are located in the medical system's buildings on the grounds of the university. To find our offices: park in the garage on Lee Street. Enter through the primary care entrance opposite from the main entrance to the parking garage.
Walk straight past the pharmacy. Turn right at the fork, crossing the link (enclosed bridge) into the second floor of Jordan Hall. Turn left, then immediately right. Follow this corridor most of the way down, then turn left towards the elevators. Take the elevators to the 7th floor, turn left and follow the signs for the Microbiology Office (room 7012). more directions
Q. How do I get access to the buildings?
A. The buildings comprising the medical system are accessible to authorized personnel only. Your university ID functions as a key card and must be activated. Please see Liz Hupp for information about these procedures.
