Medical Toxicology Research: Basic ScienceLaura Bechtel

The Division of Medical Toxicology has recently grown into the realm of basic science research to translate novel clinical findings seen in our clinical practice to the molecular level.  In 2006, Dr. Laura Bechtel joined our group with a PhD in Pharmacology/Toxicology and an impressive resume of past broad experience.  Through her experience, numerous basic science research projects are currently underway.  UVa offers a broad availability of laboratory facilities for research project collaboration.

Dr. Laura Bechtel performs analyses of drugs
found in blood samples sent to the UVA Toxicology Lab.

Current Research:

  • Bechtel LK, Holstege CP: The Analysis of Hellebore for digoxin-like substances. Funded by the AACT (in process).
  • Bechtel LK, Attridge J: Neoprofen plasma levels in ELBW infants and their relationship to end-organ blood flow. (in process).
  • Bechtel LK, Holstege CP: Verapamil toxicity induces dysregulation of the insulin-dependent phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase pathway. Presented at SAEM 2007.
  • Bechtel LK, Holstege CP: High dose insulin reverses calcium channel blocker inhibition of glucose uptake in an adipocyte model. Presented at SAEM 2007.
  • Tenharmsel A, Holstege CP, Louters L. High dose insulin reverses verapamil inhibition of glucose uptake in mouse striated muscle. Ann Emerg Med 2005;46(3):S77. Presented at ACEP Research Forum 2005.
