Two afternoons per week - Clinical Skills Educator Program (see below)
Twice monthly, on Thursdays, Student Morning Report will include teh presentation of cases highlighting issues in medical ethics.  On those mornings, Dr. Walt Davis, will join the group to guide discussions.

CONFERENCES AND ROUNDS

On weekdays at approximately 0900 hours, you will meet with your attending physician.  The attending will outline the format of these meetings.  In most instances, you will present cases and discuss problems of diagnosis and management.  Be prepared to present a complete history and physical examination of any of your patients.  You should be prepared to demonstrate any abnormalities of the physical examination.  On some services, teaching rounds are combined with work rounds.

Student Morning Report will take place Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 0815-0900 in Room 6410 of University Hospital.  We will discuss 1 or 2 cases brought by you at each session.  Please come prepared to present recent admissions that you consider to be of interest to your colleagues.  Bring appropriate EKGs.  Morning Report will not take place on the first Monday of each monthly block rotation.  Students are not invited to attend Intern or Resident Morning Report except when Student Morning Report is canceled.

Ethics Rounds: One Thursday morning every other week will be devoted to Ethics Conference with a member of the Department of Biomedical Ethics, Dr. Walt Davis.  Please come prepared to discuss a case with which you have been involved that raised your concerns about ethics or professionalism.

Clinical Skills Educator Program:  During the inpatient rotation, a faculty member will meet with 4-6 students twice weekly in the afternoons.  Each session will consist of two hours.  The students will be responsible for selecting and presenting cases (likely two cases at each session), and the faculty member will then go to the bedside with the students and review clinical skills and physical findings.  Thereafter, the faculty member might review laboratory and radiological findings with the students and assist them in developing an ordered differential diagnosis and plan of management.  The mentor will also review and comment on the written admission workup and progress notes of the student.  The faculty member will also evaluate each of the students at the end of the rotation.  Comments will be included in the narrative summary of student performance, but the evaluation will not be part of the clerkship grade.  The mentor will, however, be in an excellent position to sign off on elements in the Clinical Skills Passport.

Medical Grand Rounds, Tuesday, 0800-0900 hours (Jordan Hall Amphitheater, unless otherwise notified).

Clinical Pathology Conference, One Wednesday of each month (canceled for the Summer), 1100-1200 hours, Autopsy Auditorium Conference Room.  Attendance at this fine conference is strongly encouraged.

Acute Care Conference, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday 1200-1300 hours, (July-October only), various locations.  Practical approaches to common, acute problems.

Clinical Medicine Conference, Thursday, 1200-1300 hours, (Nov-Jan only) Camp Heart Auditorium:  This discussion of patients who have recently been admitted to the medical service concentrates on elements in medical decision-making and clinicopathological correlations.  This is one of the best teaching conferences in the Department.  Attendance is expected.

Laboratory Rounds, 3rd floor Physicians' Work Room:  In addition to being available part time for consultation by students, Mrs. Louise Perrin meets formally with students on the rotation to give practical instruction in fundamental laboratory techniques (CBC, gram stain, blood smears, urinalysis, etc.) in the student/ housestaff laboratory on the 3rd floor.  She will schedule these rounds with you individually.

Noon Didactic Conferences, Refer to the Residents' monthly Google calendar for schedule and location.
