 Healthcare Provider (HCP) and Renewal Courses


The Healthcare Provider Courses meet the prerequisite requirement for ACLS, PALS and the BLS Instructor Course. All AHA BLS courses are two year certifications.

These courses cover the initial management of a cardiac arrest in the adult/child/infant, proper use of an automated external defibrillator (AED) in the adult/child, respiratory arrest, and airway obstruction in the adult, child , and infant. Participants have the opportunity to practice skills during the Practice While Watch video, take a written test, and practical evaluation. 

AHA Healthcare Provider On-line Course


Non Health System employees: This Link to the AHA course information page describes the registration process, cost, and prerequisites for the on-line course. 

In addition to traditional instructor-led HCP courses,  the LSLC offers practice and skills test sessions for the On-line version of the HCP course.   Participants complete the on-line portion and then attend a brief practice and skills session led by an AHA Basic Life Support instructor.  Participants receive an AHA HCP card when both the on-line and skills test have been completed, .  If you are not within driving distance of Charlottesville, VA, please use the click here to the "find class near you" link.

Health System employees: The LSLC uses the American Heart Association's Healthcare Provider On-line Course for renewal and new courses. Those required to renew or are in need of a new Healthcare Provider course should contact the Life Support Learning Center (924-1765) or by e-mail to determine if they qualify to receive an access key for the online renewal course.
