Services

Full-text Journals

The Health Sciences Library subscribes to many electronic journals that are available to our patrons at no cost. Please check Find@UVa before placing a document delivery request.

Interlibrary Loan Service

The Library subsidizes all costs for regular interlibrary loan services (charges may apply for “Rush” delivery). The average turnaround time for regular article delivery is three to five days, depending on the nature of the request. Rush service is available for articles needed within two business days. The average turnaround time for books is ten to twelve days. Rush service is not available for books.

Photocopy Service

Health Sciences Library staff will photocopy articles from our collection for $3 per article. Turnaround time depends on the number of photocopy requests and the workload of the Document Delivery unit, but most photocopy requests are filled within 48 hours.

LEO On-Grounds Retrieval/Delivery Service

Health System faculty and staff may request books and journal articles from other UVa libraries using Virgo, the library catalog, at holdings display. The service is free and the turnaround time is usually two to four business days. All materials delivered by LEO for Health System users are made available for checkout at our Circulation desk.

Remote Storage Retrieval

Except for items housed in Historical Collections, all journals published before 1964 and all books published before 1970 are at the University of Virginia's Ivy Stacks storage site on Ivy Road. Please go to the Ivy Stacks' Web page for hours of service and instructions on how to request items.

Placing Orders

Interlibrary Loan

To use our interlibrary loan services you must first register in ILLiad. Once registered, you may request articles directly from an Ovid MEDLINE or CINAHL search or you can copy and paste into ILLiad. Please note that we adhere to the provisions of the Copyright Law, so please read all copyright statements before submitting a request.

Photocopy Service

Photocopy Service requests can be made directly through Ovid MEDLINE/CINAHL, by using ILLiad, or by using our paper order form.

LEO Service

To order an item from another UVa library using the LEO service, find the item in the library catalog and then click on the Request Item icon at the top or bottom of the page. Fill out the form and click on the submit button. Check the User Status option in the library catalog to track the processing of your order. You will be notified by e-mail when the item is delivered to the Health Sciences Library.

Remote Storage Retrieval

All materials requested from our remote storage facility should be made through the library catalog. Locate the item, click on the Request Item icon, and select the library that you would like the item delivered to.

Other Document Delivery Options

(The Health Sciences Library does not subsidize any of the services listed below. You are responsible for all the cost incurred.)

  • Commercial Document Suppliers: There are several commercial document suppliers on the market that offer a variety of services and delivery options. In most cases, you will be charged a flat per-article rate plus copyright fees. While most of our borrowing is library-to-library, we occasionally use CISTI (Canada Institute for Scientific and Technical Information) and have been happy with their service. Please check Jean Shipman's Document Delivery Suppliers page for a complete list of commercial document suppliers.
  • Pay-Per-View: Some publishers offer instant access to full-text articles through pay-per-view, which may come in handy if you need quick access to an article during non-business hours. Please check the publisher's Web site for pay-per-view availability. For an example of a publisher that offers pay-per-view access, please go to the Highwire Press Web site.
