Ann Duesing was appointed the Outreach Librarian for the southwest Virginia region in August 1995. Her office is located at the University of Virginia's College at Wise.
Through a cooperative arrangement with the college library, in addition to providing health sciences information Outreach Services for the region, Ann serves as a reference librarian for the Wyllie Library. Outreach services include phone reference, computer literature searches, Web searches, document delivery assistance, consultation on developing personal or institutional information resources, database search training, such as Internet Grateful Med and PubMed, and classes on Internet health information access for healthcare providers, librarians and consumers.
An early focus of the Outreach efforts in southwestern Virginia included training in Grateful Med searching and computer equipment placement in regional hospitals, clinics and resource centers. This program was developed by VAMIS, Virginia Medical Information Systems, and supported by a grant from the Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Library to the Virginia Council of Health Sciences Librarians. Ann served as a trainer and mentor for the program, which provided her with an opportunity to become acquainted with the geography and people of the area. Ann also works with the Southwest Virginia AHEC. Through referrals, program planning, grant writing and administrative assistance, many classes, presentations and exhibits are developed and provided. One series of classes, Internet Resources for Health Professionals, was provided with assistance from the AHEC and funded by a grant received from the National Library of Medicine under a contract with the University of Maryland, Baltimore.
Ann is also involved in the Appalachian Regional Consortium Health Services Committee, LENOWISCO Diabetes Coalition, and the LENOWISCO chapter of CHALIC (Central Highlands Appalachian Leadership Initiative on Cancer). Ann participates in local and regional health sciences library professional groups such as SWvAHILI (Southwest Virginia Health Information Librarians) and VaCOHSL (Virginia Council of Health Sciences Librarians).
Ann received her undergraduate degree from the University of Missouri, Columbia, and her Masters in Library Science from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill. Before her move to southwest Virginia, Ann was director of the Medical and School of Nursing Libraries at Community Medical Center in Scranton, PA. She also served as a reference librarian for the University of Scranton's Weinberg Memorial Library where she worked with faculty, nursing, physical therapy and premed students as well as the general student population, both undergraduate and graduate.
