Visitor Information

Visiting Hours

  • Visiting hours are from 8:00 a.m. - 9:00 p.m. for all nursing units.
  • A visitor pass must be obtained from the Information Desk upon arrival to permit entry to patient unit.
  • Parents of hospitalized children are encouraged to visit at any time; special arrangements must be made through the Children's hospital. 
  • Two (2) visitors per patient at any one time.
  • For the safety of children and our patients, all requests for child visitation under the age of 12 are to be approved by the patient's caregivers.  Once approved, all children must be screened for current illnesses and vaccinations.  Visits by children at the patient bedside must be brief (10-20 minutes).

Mail Delivery & E-Cards

Receiving mail from home can be the highlight of a patient's day.  To send cards to a loved one use the following address:

Parking

Lee Street East and West Parking Decks

  • General and Handicap parking is available in the two parking decks located on Lee Street across from University Hospital and the Primary Care Center.
  • Parking is free to those visiting patients and for clinic visits. For those visiting patients please have your garage ticket validated at the Information Desk located in the main lobby of University Hospital. Patients please have your garage ticket validated at your clinic appointment.
  • Oversized vehicles (over 6 feet 8 inches) are too tall to fit in the parking decks. Pull into the circle in front of University Hospital and obtain a parking permit from a member of the Front Door Team in order to park in an alternate lot.

Hospital Drive Parking

Limited general and handicap parking is available on Hospital Drive.  Access is made off University Avenue (the Corner). 

West Complex Parking

Handicap parking spaces are available off Jefferson Park Avenue and on Hospital Drive.  General parking is asked to utilize the Lee Street Parking Decks.

Patient Assistance

The main entrances of University Hospital, West Complex Jefferson Park Avenue entrance, and the West Complex Hospital Drive entrance are staffed with Front Door Greeters to provide patients with wheelchairs and assist with other needs.

Shuttle Service

Passenger shuttle service run regularly between UVA Health System clinical sites, selected parking areas and guest lodging facilities.  Please notify a member of the Front Door Team if you need transportation via shuttle.

Information Desk

Our guest relations staff is located in the first floor lobby of University Hospital, the first floor lobby of the West Complex, and the first floor of the Primary Care Center.  They are happy to provide assistance to patients and families, issue visitor passes, direct you to the appropriate location, validate parking, and to answer any questions pertaining to your visit.

Patient & Guest Services assists with the flow of information between guests and the Medical Center.  We strive to create a welcoming, comfortable and pleasant environment.

We can:

  • Provide general information
  • Provide directions
  • Provide assistance with lodging arrangements
  • Communicate visitation guidelines
  • Triage to other UVa resources
  • Notarize documents

Visitor Lounges

  • Lounges are available near our patient units for visitors' comfort.
  • A telephone and computer is available in each lounge.

Dining

During your visit we provide two options for you to dine.  The cafeteria is located on the first floor adjacent to the lobby in University Hospital and is open 24 hours a day.  An additional food option is the Wahoo West Café located on the ground floor of the West Complex.  Hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 7:00 am - 2:30 pm.

ATM Machine

An ATM machine is located in the University Hospital cafeteria, seating/vending area.  An additional ATM machine is located off the pedestrian link between University Hospital and the Primary Care Center.  University of Virginia Credit Union banking is available on the ground level of the Lee Street West Parking Deck. 

Telephones

  • Telephones are available in all patient rooms. 
  • Incoming calls are available from 7:00am - 10:00 pm. 
  • You may place local calls by dialing ‘9' to get an outside line, followed by the number.
  • Long distances calls must be charged on your telephone credit card or placed collect.

Gift Shop

The Hospital Auxiliary gift shop is located off the first floor lobby of University Hospital and offers flowers, balloons, stuffed animals, gift items of all kinds, magazines, snack foods, toiletries, and sundries.  Hours of operation are Monday - Friday, 9:00 am - 8:00 pm.  Saturday, 9:00 am - 5:00 pm and Sunday, 1:00 pm - 5:00 pm.

UVa Health System provides Hospitality Houses and Apartments as homes away from home for our patients & families and for outpatients who need to be near our medical services. Our smoke-free houses feature a kitchen, laundry facility, a TV lounge, shared rooms and baths. Families staying bedside with a patient are welcome to use the houses, at no charge, for laundry, showering, cooking and resting. A referral from Medical Center staff is required for reservations. The Ronald McDonald House in Charlottesville is close to our hospital and offers families of our pediatric patients a fully equipped kitchen, playroom, "quiet" living room and a recreation deck. For information, call 434-295-6412.
