Overview
The outpatient clinical training experience involves opportunities for trainees to observe and manage adult and adolescent patients with a wide variety of infectious diseases in several different ambulatory clinics staffed by faculty members from the Division of Infectious Diseases. Completion of these rotations results in a well-rounded experience for trainees, ensuring their competence for the longitudinal care of patients with a broad range of clinical infectious diseases seen in the outpatient setting.
Beginning in the second year of the fellowship program, trainees will be responsible for the longitudinal care of patients within the UVA Ryan White HIV Clinic. Each trainee will be assigned one half-day per week to attend their own HIV clinic where they will be responsible for the ongoing care of a panel of patients as overseen by the HIV Clinic faculty members within the Division of Infectious Diseases. This clinic will run throughout the last two years of the fellowship program and will comprise the majority of the longitudinal care training experience.
Fellows will also oversee the care of patients with a variety of acute and chronic infections within the Outpatient Infectious Disease Clinic (non-HIV), Sexually Transmitted Disease Clinic, and Traveler’s Clinic over 7 months split between the second and third years of training. Patients seen in these clinics will be cared for under the supervision of dedicated faculty members from the Division of Infectious Diseases and will be seen in both short-term and longitudinal capacities depending on their needs.
