Call Structure |
Each ward rotation consists of 3 to 5 resident/intern/medical student teams. During a standard month, each team spends three weeks on day-call and one week on "night float" taking overnight admissions.
General Medicine Ward (Day Call, Sun-Thurs)
- Intern arrives to pre-round by 6:30 AM
- Admit new patients from 7:00 AM - 7:00 PM
- Work Rounds with resident 7:30 to 8:00 AM
- Internal Medicine Resident Morning Report 8:00 to 9:00 AM
- Attending Rounds 9:00 to 11:00 AM
- Noon Conference
- Non-call teams sign out at 5:00 PM
- Remain in hospital for cross-cover until 8:00 PM when night intern assumes care of patients
General Medicine Ward (Night Call, Sun-Thur)
- Night intern and resident arrive at 8:00 PM
- Admit patients with resident from 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM
- Present new admissions to attending on rounds the following morning
- Leave hospital by 10:00 AM
- Upon completion of night rotation Friday, night resident and intern have remainder of weekend off and return to day call on Monday
General Medicine Ward Overnight Call (Fri-Sat)
- Admitting team (resident/intern) remains in hospital overnight to cover patients admitted through 10 PM. In addition, admitting team cross-covers other General Medicine Teams overnight.
- Admissions after 10 PM done by off-service upper level resident and presented the next morning.
- Post-call interns leave hospital on Saturday or Sunday by 1:00 PM
Digestive Health
- Call schedule is similar to General Medicine
Medical Intensive Care Unit
- 4 resident/intern teams
- Each team admits from 7:00 AM to 7:00 AM with 24 hour call
- Post-call intern and resident leave hospital no later than 1:00 PM
Acute Cardiology
- 4 resident/intern teams on long-call every 4th day and short-call on "day 2"
- The short-call team admits from 7:00 AM to 3:00 PM, or a maximum of 3 admits
- The long-call team admits from 3:00 PM to 7:00 AM the next day
- Non-call teams sign out at 5:00 PM
- On-call day intern stays overnight to admit and cross-cover with supervision provided by an off-service overnight CCU resident
- Overflow from 8:00 PM to 7:00 AM admitted to CCU or Fellow service
- Post-call intern leaves hospital no later than 1:00 PM
Coronary Care Unit
- 2 resident/intern teams
- 2 day teams admit every other day from 8:00 AM to 8:00 PM
- Teams generally leave the hospital on non-admitting days by 2:00 PM
- 1 overnight intern admits from 8:00 PM to 8:00 AM Sunday through Thursday with supervision by an off-service resident
- Teams rotate between day call and night float during the month with each team spending at least one week doing night admissions
Hematology-Oncology Ward
- 3 residents and 4 interns are assigned to the service each month
- Teams are on-call every 3rd day
- Each intern works one week of nights from Sunday through Thursday in which they do cross-cover and admit new patients with in-house resident backup

Medicine Grand Rounds: Tuesdays, 8:00 - 9:00 AM
Morbidity & Mortality Conference: Fridays at 12:00 Noon
Afternoon Attending teaching sessions are scheduled at a mutually advantageous time for the team, usually around 3:00 PM.
