"As if intern year alone doesn't present enough challenges, I arrived in Charlottesville with a 5 month old son and no immediate family within 1000 miles. My wife liked C'ville when she visited with me during our interview, but had reservations. Would there be enough activities to do with a growing child? Would her intern husband ever be home to see his son? Looking back now, we would both say: Yes!
Charlottesville-Albemarle is consistently ranked as one of the best places in the nation to raise a family, and for good reason. By the middle of my intern year my wife and son were enjoying activities that included a mommy-child fitness group, weekly play groups through the Housestaff Social Network, and a music class at a local church. In addition, the proximity to Shenandoah National Park, Richmond, and Washington, D.C. has allowed us to take brief road trips to explore the rich beauty of Virginia. While there were times I wished I could be home for a whole weekend during my intern year, it was very comforting to see my family quickly find a home in Charlottesville."
