"Beginning residency is daunting. The switch from medical student to resident brings more responsibility than ever before. So it's important to get the best experience you can. For me, it was important to find a training program that was resident-driven. And that's what I've found here at UVA.
There is tremendous opportunity in this program to grow as a resident. A huge key to this is that our attendings love to teach. We have teaching sessions almost daily in addition to what occurs on rounds. I've also been impressed with the atmosphere − attendings interact with residents more as colleagues than as superiors, care about what you are striving to become, and give you the autonomy to reach your goals. This has helped me to adjust to resident life more quickly than I expected.
Right now I'm on an ICU rotation and getting lots of experience doing procedures (one of my concerns during interviews). I know the whole residency program search process is a little unnerving, but you will get through it and you will match. Good luck!"
