"My interview day at UVA was surprising. I knew about the program's great reputation, but never imagined the wonderful collegial atmosphere that exists here. At morning report everyone was having a good laugh at a caricature of the chief residents as the characters from the Wizard of Oz. It was obvious throughout my visit that the residents really enjoyed spending time together. And that's why I chose UVA.
In addition to offering a top-notch training experience, the program engenders a real esprit de corps among the housestaff. It seemed to me that if residents could work long, hard hours and maintain such positive attitudes, then this was the place I needed to be, and these were the people I wanted to be surrounded by.
After more than a year here, I'm happy to say that my first impression holds true. I am constantly amazed by the level of support available to us. There's a responsiveness to the needs of residents and people are willing to bend over backwards if it can help make your life easier. Our Program Director, Dr. Donowitz, and the chiefs are continually molding aspects of the program to reflect resident feedback.
It's really no wonder why residents are so happy here. When you're treated this well it is easy to pour everything you've got into learning how to be an excellent physician. I can't think of anywhere else I'd rather be."
