We are excited about the direction of the Internal Medicine Residency Program at UVa. A number of innovative changes have been introduced into our curriculum to enhance our strong foundation in resident education, patient care and research. We are committed to training Physician-Educators, empowering Physician-Scientists, and promoting individualized Physician Development.
Training Physician-Educators is a cornerstone of the residency program. There is a true commitment to a partnership of learning and teaching here that sets UVa apart from other institutions. The faculty and residents are dedicated to education, which is exemplified by the willingness of our residents and attendings to spend extra time going through a difficult differential diagnosis or to teach about an interesting case. Our residency web site includes teaching PowerPoint slides, handouts, and a continuously updated web catalog of relevant articles for each subspecialty. We have also refocused attention on the importance of physical diagnosis – and have developed a physical diagnosis curriculum for interns that complements the bedside teaching that occurs on the wards. Additionally, we have developed an intern seminar-based curriculum entitled "Teaching Doctors to Teach." This is led by one of our master physician educators and helps prepare an intern for the transition to senior resident and the increased responsibility for education that comes with that.
With respect to our Physician-Scientist training program, a new resident-oriented dedicated research curriculum incorporated into the three years of residency provides a structure for residents to be involved in meaningful, longitudinal research projects. Our website maintains an up-to-date listing of active research within the Department of Medicine and identifies faculty members who are looking for resident involvement. In addition, UVa has developed a unique training opportunity for residents who are interested in academic medicine: the Clinical Investigator Track. In this three-year program, residents meet the basic requirements for clinical training in Internal Medicine while simultaneously earning a Master's Degree in Clinical Investigation and Patient Oriented Research. For more information, check out the Research area of our website.
The electives and ancillary programs offered by UVa are organized into an individualized Physician Development plan aimed at achieving each resident's unique career goals. With this in mind, we are very excited to have implemented a year-long Career Development Curriculum. The focus of this curriculum is to optimize your time during residency to achieve your personal career goals, and to focus on providing a successful transition into any area of medicine – whether subspecialty fellowship training, hospital medicine, or primary care medicine. UVa has many experts in this process that we collaborate with to provide advice based on experience. Additionally, the third-year residents take a special leadership and mentoring role, providing invaluable "real-world" experience, as they have recently successfully navigated through job and fellowship application.
Responding to the interest of our residents, we have developed a wide range of opportunities in International Health Experiences, Humanities in Medicine, and Health Policy. Furthermore, there are ample opportunities for mentoring of residents interested in careers in Primary Care or academic Hospitalist Medicine.
UVa is a special place and we are very proud of our comprehensive, dynamic, and innovative program that responds to the needs of our housestaff. We believe our education, research, and development initiatives are meeting the challenges of modern medical education. We look forward to meeting you and introducing you to our residency program on a personal level when you come for an interview.
