The UVa Health System strives to continually expand in all of our missions – patient care, education and research. To support this, we are actively engaged in improving our physical facilities, recruiting and retaining excellent faculty and staff, expanding our clinical programs, strengthening our recognized centers of excellence, and streamlining our processes for health care delivery.

Facilities Expansion

We are nearing completion of a four-year major hospital expansion project to improve facilities for patient care. In 2005 we opened a 6-story expansion wing housing expanded clinical and support space for:
• 14 new Operating Rooms with new laminar airflow system and "Smart OR" technology
• Heart Center clinics, invasive and non-invasive procedure areas
• Interventional Radiology services
• Clinical Laboratories

On the horizon are new facilities that will allow us to expand the services offered by the UVa National Cancer Institute Cancer Center and by our UVa Children's Hospital.

A planned 85,000-square-foot medical education building will provide new technologies and flexible teaching spaces to support innovative medical instruction, including training in emergency medicine for students, residents, and state emergency medical technicians. The facility will include specialized multimedia classrooms, video-equipped exam rooms for analyzing student-patient interactions, and a Medical Simulation Training Center for honing skills.

NIH support for medical research at UVa has grown significantly, and we are working to keep pace with quality laboratory space. A new 150,000-square-foot research building (MR5) houses laboratories for more than 400 researchers in biomedical engineering, pathology, and the cardiovascular sciences. Groundbreaking has occurred for MR6 which will provide space for another 300 researchers and technicians in fields including cancer, immunology, allergies and infectious diseases.

Dr. Hostler photo

"We are creating models in a number of areas such as translational research, superior patient service access and care, distributed networks serving patients at a distance, use of electronic data for the most effective and efficient care, optimal education based upon what the learner needs to know and how best to teach, as well as models for policy. In the words of Thomas Jefferson about the University he founded: 'A blessing to my state, and not unuseful to some others.'"
Sharon L. Hostler, M.D., Interim Vice President and Dean
UVa School of Medicine

Education & Research

Through constant innovation and collaboration, the UVa School of Medicine and the Health System strive for continued excellence in our educational, research and community outreach programs. Some examples of initiatives underway:

  • New Center for Health Disparities and a disparities fellowship in the MPH Program
  • New Center for Consumer Health Education
  • New Center for Humanism in Medicine
  • Development of new curriculum and models for education in the School of Medicine
  • Increased NIH clinical research funding
  • Development of improved infrastructure for researchers through a clinical trials database, grants and interim funding, and integrated web resources

Health Care Delivery

UVa leaders, faculty, and staff work together in interdisciplinary, collaborative teams to meet targets for improving access and quality in the health care services we provide. Some current initiatives include:

  • Clinic Metrics for scheduling of initial outpatient visit appointments, wait time to exam room and wait time to provider
  • Focus on patient Discharges by Noon to facilitate admission and postop placements
  • Bed Center software for organizing admission and transfer of patients
  • Patient Transition Unit for pending admissions and discharges
  • Ongoing review to support addition of new, clinically differentiated programs

"We need to link everything we do very closely to the provision of care. We have excellent researchers, and we have excellent caregivers and clinicians. Bringing those pieces closer together presents exciting opportunities."
R. Edward Howell, Vice President and CEO, UVa Medical Center
