
Our Application Process
The University of Virginia Health System is a participating member of the National Resident Matching Program. All applicants for first-year residency appointments must register with the NRMP. All applications to our program must be submitted via the Electronic Residency Application Service (ERAS). Hard copy applications via regular mail or fax will not be accepted.
The deadline for accepting applications is December 31, 2009.
A Complete Application includes:
- NRMP Application Form
- Medical School Dean's Letter
- United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Scores of 200 or above on the first attempt (Step 1 required, Step 2 optional)
- Medical School Transcripts
- At least two Letters of Recommendation
- Personal Statement
Requirements for Foreign Medical Graduates include:
- United States Medical Licensing Exam (USMLE) Scores of 200 or above on the first attempt
- Graduation from medical school within the past five years
- One year of clinical experience in the United States
- Current ECFMG certification
- We support only J-1 visas
A formal interview is required to be considered for the program. Applications will not be reviewed in ERAS until they are complete. Upon review, interviews will be granted by e-mail notification. Interviews will be conducted from November to January.

Interview Day
Our Housestaff take applicants and their guests to dinner on Sunday or Wednesday evening before each interview session. We encourage applicants to participate in the dinner program as it affords an opportunity to speak with current housestaff and their families. Applicants are welcome to bring their spouse or significant other.
On interview day, you will:
- Interview with one member of our faculty
- Interview with one member of the Intern Selection Committee
- Attend Medical Grand Rounds or Clinical Medicine Conference
- Participate in Morning Report
- Tour the Health System
- Meet informally with many members of our Housestaff
- Be our guest for lunch
The formal activities of the interview day end at approximately 2:00 PM.
Travel & Accommodations
Hotels in the area (some within walking distance of the University and the Medical Center) offer reduced room rates for applicants. To ensure special rates, you must mention when you make your reservation that you are interviewing for a Residency or Fellowship Program at the University of Virginia Medical Center.
