The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases(NIDDK) is part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH). NIDDK conducts and supports research on many of the most serious diseases affecting public health. The Institute supports much of the clinical research on the diseases of internal medicine and related subspecialty fields as well as many basic science disciplines. The Institute's research encompasses the broad spectrum of metabolic diseases such as diabetes, inborn errors of metabolism, endocrine disorders, mineral metabolism, digestive diseases, nutrition, urology and renal disease, and hematology. ICAN is proud to be sponsored by NIDDK.
The General Clinical Research Center (GCRC) is an NIH-supported multi-disciplinary research facility located on the 8th Floor of the University Hospital of the University of Virginia Health System. The GCRC provides investigators with the specialized resources necessary to conduct advanced clinical research. The facility includes ten inpatient beds, skilled research nurses, a core assay laboratory, a metabolic kitchen, outpatient facilities, computing and statistical consultants and facilities, and sleep and exercise physiology laboratories. ICAN laboratory services for our Charlottesville participants are being provided by GCRC.
Southern Health Services, Inc. (Southern Health) is an Individual Physician Association (IPA) HMO formed as a limited partnership in Richmond, Virginia in 1984 by a group of local area physicians. In 1996, Coventry Health Care Inc. acquired Southern Health Services, Inc. This gave Southern Health the resources and financial strength of a large national Managed Care Company. In September, 2001, Coventry acquired Blue Ridge Health Alliance, Inc. (BRHA) and its HMO subsidiary in Charlottesville, QualChoice of Virginia Health Plan, Inc. and merged it with Southern Health. Coventry provides a full range of managed care products and services including HMO, PPO, POS, Medicare Risk and Medicaid to 1.8 million members in a broad cross section of employer and government-funded groups in 13 markets throughout the Midwest, Mid-Atlantic and Southeast United States. Today Southern Health Services, Inc. provides health care benefits to approximately 160,000 members in every region of Virginia with the exception of the tidewater area and the most western part of Virginia. ICAN is pleased to work in partnership with Southern Health on this very important project.
