Settled in the 18th century on a hill overlooking the Rivanna River,
was named in honor of Queen Charlotte, wife of King George III. The scenic Blue Ridge Mountains serve as a backdrop to the city, 120 miles from Washington, D.C. and 70 miles from the state capitol, Richmond.
The area's economic base centers on tourism, higher education, light manufacturing, agriculture, and retail trade. Each year thousands of tourists view the Grounds of the University of Virginia, the homes of Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroe, and tour the wineries of Albemarle County. The Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley offer plentiful recreational opportunities, adding to the high quality of life provided by the historical character and natural beauty of the area.
There's plenty to do in the Charlottesville-Albemarle and surrounding regions. Local attractions include: presidential homes Monticello, Montpelier, and Ashland-Highland; musical and cultural venues Charlottesville Pavilion, John Paul Jones Arena, Paramount Theater, and Virginia Film Festival; recreation such as Hiking the Appalachian Trail, Hot Air Ballooning, and the Outdoor Adventure Social Club; and an incredible selection of casual and fine dining establishments.
