What is the House Staff Social Network ?
We are an organization of the spouses/partners of residents and fellows (as well as the residents and fellows, themselves) who get together to socialize and support one another during the residency/fellowship years.

Support:  Our goal is to provide a community where UVA House Staff and their traveling support group (i.e., spouses, partners, and families) feel at home. We'd like to welcome you to the area and tell you more about our group.

Fun:  We have several interest groups (e.g., Book Club, Playgroup, and Hiking Club) that meet regularly and strive to create a fun atmosphere where you can meet new friends. If you have an idea for a club, we want to hear it!

Resource:  The HSN also serves as a great resource for finding doctors, housing, job opportunities, babysitters, and a variety of other things that you might need during and after your move to the Charlottesville area.

Interested? Want to hear more? Please come to our Welcome Reception on July 12 (see above for details). We look forward to meeting you!

Setting up UVa Access on a MAC

Due to the growing popularity of Macintosh computers in my department, and non-support of these computers by UVa HS/CS, I wrote an article outlining how to set up basic hospital functionality (PACS, Carecast, etc.) on a MAC. See the downloadable documents below.

Grocery & Meal Prep Service
Posted:  11-20-07
By:  Anna Parker, PGY-1, Surgery
PIC 2880, Phone 434-882-1146
amp4v@virginia.edu

I'm one of the new surgery interns and finding it very difficult to find time to get groceries and cook anything resembling a balanced meal in the evenings. I found a woman who would be willing to deliver prepared meals to the hospital that you could heat up at home if there were enough of us interested. See her reply below. If you're interested, just let me know.

Hi Anna,
I would be more than happy to do this if you could possibly get 7-10 people to sign up too. The meals would be delivered in a 2 week supply, 5 meals per week with large portions. All meals would be vacuum packed and reheated by putting in boiling water until warm through (usually 5 minutes). This is a French technique called sous-vide cooking. You would need to thaw out your meals in the fridge for 1 day before reheating them. You could reheat from the frozen state, but it would take 15 minutes or so. All the freshness is maintained and the quality is perfect. The cost would be 6.50 per meal and would end up costing 130.00 per month. I would deliver the meals frozen, to the hospital every two weeks. I would send each of you preference sheets where you would choose meats, fish, veggies etc. that you prefer. All the food would be all natural and organic when possible. I hope this can work for you.
Heidi
