Requirements for Temporary Clinical Staff Appointments

Temporary appointments will be provided to NEW housestaff members when circumstances prevent approval of credentials materials by the effective date of appointment.

In most circumstances, all documentation required for appointment is required to provide a temporary appointment. However, in extremely special circumstances (determined by the Chair, Credentials Committee), minimum credentials requirements for consideration of temporary appointments are:

  • Letter from clinical department chair requesting and explaining necessity for temporary appointment,
  • Letter from clinical department chair requesting appointment of new staff member, as specified under 'Requirements for Clinical Staff Initial Housestaff Appointment',
  • Supplemental Application,
  • Application form,
  • Copy of current Virginia license, showing expiration date, and
  • Certificate of Insurance for current liability coverage, showing coverage limits and dates of coverage, where necessary.
  • Query results from NPDB, HIPDB, OIG, and GSA.

All requests for temporary appointment will be reviewed and acted upon by an Executive Committee of the Credentials Committee. The Executive Committee may be, at a minimum, the Credentials Committee Chair and the President of the Clinical Staff.

Temporary appointments may be granted for no longer than 90 days. If, at the end of the temporary appointment, credentials materials have not been presented as required for approval by the Credentials Committee and the Clinical Staff Executive Committee, privileges will be terminated.

Temporary appointments will not be granted in lieu of reappointments.
