Well Bear Clinic
Well Bear Clinic is a University of Virginia Children's
Hospital outreach program that uses play to familiarize children with
the hospital and medical staff. The goal is to lessen a child's fears
about going to the doctor. Well Bear Clinic is held at the Kluge
Children's Rehabilitation Center in odd-numbered years. Children bring
favorite stuffed animals or dolls and assist staff in completing a well
bear check-up. The check-up includes height, weight, temperature, and
blood pressure. The "patients" also receive pretend shots and complete
a dental check-up. Each participant receives a University of Virginia
Children's Hospital Junior Medic Kit containing a mask, gloves,
toothbrush, and other essentials to extend his or her learning at home.
Well Bear Clinic is conducted by Hospital Education Program (HEP) staff
and local volunteers. Local preschool, daycare, kindergarten, and
primary grade school groups attend Well Bear Clinic. Individual
families wishing to visit should contact the HEP office at (434)
924-2658 for details.
