Special Education Services
Some hospitalized
children may experience a change of status due to illness or injury
that impacts their ability to function in the general education
program. With parent permission the Hospital Education Program (HEP)
may conduct a comprehensive special education evaluation for the child
who is suspected of having a disability. If a child is found eligible
for special education and related services, an education team meets
with the parent(s) and student, where appropriate, to develop an
Individualized Education Program (IEP) for the hospital stay. Home
school personnel are invited to participate in eligibility and IEP
meetings.
For the child who is
already identified as a special education student, the hospital teacher
requests a copy of the home school IEP. With parent permission the IEP
may be modified for use during hospitalization. If deemed appropriate
by a child's IEP team, the HEP may conduct a special education
reevaluation with parent permission.
All HEP services are free to children and their families. For additional information, contact (434) 924-2658.
