School-Aged Education
Education services are available throughout the
University of Virginia Children's Hospital for school-aged children
from first grade through high school graduation. Whether hospitalized
on the 7th floor of University Hospital or at the Kluge
Children's Rehabilitation Center, patients are encouraged to attend
school for individual and group instruction in the classrooms. Bedside
services are also available for students who are confined to their
rooms. Physical education is offered at University Hospital for children from age 2 through high school.
Students
who are seen for three or more days are enrolled in the Hospital
Education Program (HEP). Contact is made with the child's home school
to obtain assignments. For the child who is in special education, a
copy of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) is requested from
the home school division. With parent permission the IEP may be
modified for use during hospitalization. For the child who is
suspected of having a disability, the HEP may implement the eligibility
process with parent permission.
For
students enrolled in the HEP, credit for completed academic work and
attendance is transferred to their home schools. Following discharge a
summary of the student's participation and educational progress is
shared with the local teacher/guidance counselor.
All HEP services are free to children and their families. For additional information, contact (434) 924-2658.
