Galax Fiddler's Convention
by
Mark Allen Vass
Quick to respond positively to any opportunity to share stories about his home town, Mark created this constellation of patriotic colors in honor of the internationally known Galax Fiddler's Convention. It is an interesting, if little known fact, that Galax takes its name from a type of pine tree that grows in the mountains in the area. Mark had an intuitive sense of the importance of the trees in the quilt. To accompany his quilt, Mark wrote a song about the regional legend of the "Shootout at the Carroll County Courthouse." It was put to music by Jeff Romano and later performed by Jeff, Gary Green, world champion harmonica player, and Elizabeth White, vocalist. Mark's writing was done in conjunction with the CMC Teen Writing Workshop conducted by David Kleiner through the Hospital Education Program (grant provided by the State Department of Education.)
