Tom Sawyer "Showing Off"

Local Image

A scene from Tom Sawyer inspired Carrie to create this scene. Tom Sawyer is standing on his head to impress his new neighbor, Becky. The form is Carrie's own silhouette, and the clothing is reminiscent of what Tom might actually have worn. Carrie made certain that the pansy that Becky tossed out was included in the design. Mark Twain probably knew that pansies symbolize thoughtfulness.
